Astronomy Education: Simple Tips to Write Paper

I intend to share information about tips on research projects or write a scientific paper in paper form. The tips are simple, those are:
First, define the formulation of the problem (research) on the field of science or engineering. Not a problem if the formulation of the problem is very complex or cannot be answered.

Second, identify a simple hypothesis test to gain a better understanding of the formulation of the problem. This process is the most severe and most important of the whole process. The reason is this process will probably spend more time to work and someone else may have been doing experiments, or even answer the problem.

Third, design one or more experiments. The resulting draft is supposed to be the best yet simple way to answer the problem formulation. The best approach to the problem faced is to make one or more hypotheses that are difficult to dispute. The important question at this stage is what is the worst possible outcome? Since you have invested a lot of time, make sure you have something to report.

Fourth, write the first draft of the paper is about to be made. Make sure you do a literature search sufficient to map out your contributions in the research-related research (related work). You can search the literature via the internet. You can also find information through write papers online.

Fifth, stop writing and do experiments. After conducting experiments, analyze the data. You will probably do some more experiments, several other experiments, or the measurements better. Once the data obtained, perform statistical analyzes and write the results section. Use pictures or curve to explain the experimental results, while the tables are very rarely used to describe something.

Sixth, wrote method. Writing a common structure used is as follow: the development of mathematics or modeling, a description of the subjects, experimental procedures, analytical measurement and statistical analysis procedures.

Seventh, go back to the beginning of the paper to make repairs or tuning the introduction. Check to be sure that all the experimental results to answer the question or formulating the problem in the introduction.

Eighth, write the discussion. This chapter aims to match the experimental results with the latest developments of science.

Ninth, explore the final reference to adding new information and paper ready to submit.

These ways spend a lot of time and thought. If you want a good paper without having to spend a lot of effort and time, you may decide to choose purchase research paper.

Paper: Obama aide tells Israel of Iran attack plan

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's national security adviser has briefed Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a U.S. contingency plan to attack Iran should diplomacy fail to curb its nuclear program, an Israeli newspaper reported on Sunday.

The Haaretz newspaper said that the U.S. adviser - Thomas Donilon - had described the plan in talks with Netanyahu earlier this month.

A senior Netanyahu aide, Harel Locker, refused to comment on the report when asked about it in an interview with an Israeli radio station. Another Israeli official reached by telephone, said "we do not comment on closed-door diplomatic meetings".

Haaretz said the secret briefing was the most significant effort by high-level U.S. officials who had visited Israel in the past month, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to try to dissuade Israel from launching its own military strike on Iran.

The report coincided with a visit to Israel by Obama's main rival in his reelection bid this November, Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who is due to meet Netanyahu on Sunday.

Quoting a senior U.S. official it said spoke on condition of anonymity, Haaretz said Donilon had told Netanyahu the Pentagon was planning for a possible decision to attack Iran's nuclear sites, and had shown him some of the plans.

In their talks, the same official said Donilon had also detailed the U.S. military's ability to penetrate nuclear facilities buried deep underground, and had said that such contingency plans were being drawn up in case of a possible deadlock in diplomacy with Iran.

The failure of talks between Iran and six world powers to secure a breakthrough in curbing what the West fears is a drive to develop nuclear weapons has raised international concerns that Israel, widely assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed state, may opt for a go-it-alone military strike.

Israel has warned the West it thinks it is only a matter of time before Iran's nuclear program achieves a "zone of immunity" in which bombs will not be able to effectively strike uranium enrichment facilities buried deep underground.

Iran says its program is solely for peaceful purposes.

On a visit to Jerusalem this month, Clinton said Israel and Washington were "on the same page" with respect to Iran, calling Iran's latest proposals to world power talks on the issue "non starters."

"Our own choice is clear, we will use all elements of American power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," Clinton said.

Blazing A Trail For Edgy Christian Speculative Fiction - blog*spot

I've been running this blog for a little over four years now. It's gone through many changes - both in regards to design and content - but I think I'm finally feeling comfortable and confident with what it stands to represent now: edgy Christian speculative fiction, and my road through self-publishing. The two go hand in hand because A) I write edgy Christian speculative fiction and B) I self-publish the edgy Christian speculative fiction that I write.

That being said, now that the solid themes of my blog have risen to the surface, I'm ready to start getting real serious about my blogging habits and the direction I want this blog to head in. For a while now I've been attempting to blog three times a week, if anything to keep me disciplined in my non-fiction writing habits. Until now, it was hard to stay disciplined when I wasn't all that clear on what my blog was trying to focus on. I easily put up posts about my books and some fun tidbits about self-publishing, but overall I feel - whether it's true or not - that this blog has been missing some meat. It hasn't been used as effectively as I'd like it to be used.

I want to blaze a trail for edgy Christian fiction and self-publishing.

In a post I put up last week, I explained how my Black Earth series came about and I talked a little about some of the challenges I have faced trying to mix Christian themes with science fiction, fantasy, and edgy content. But what good is simply doing a single post where I gush about a few hurdles? The genre that I describe is a tough one to sell - both to Christians and non-Christians alike. Many Christians are put off by anything containing edgy content - including movies, books, music, etc. (More on that next week.) Many non-Christians have no desire to read Christian fiction in any form, mainly because their idea of Christian fiction is a well-told (if that) sermon.

So here I am, three books into my Black Earth series, and I have a monumental challenge ahead of me. See, I write for a living. I don't work a '9-5', I don't scribble out short stories in my 'spare' time, I don't do this for giggles. I am serious about my writing because it is my calling, my purpose. It is my ministry. It is NOT my everything, but it is what I have been called to and that means I am expected to give 110% to it. My best.

The real question that rises to the surface of this dilemma is this: How do I reach both sides of the fence with my fiction? I mean, I know how to write good stories. If you check out most of the reviews posted on Amazon for my novels, you'll see that my work is given pretty good ratings and reviews. So the next step in this is to get this unique work out there to more people.

And that's where this blog comes in.

Part of my plan to spread the word about my writing and this particular genre is to bear down on this blog and introducing some real, though-provoking content. Yes, I'll still be revealing stretches of my journey through the self-publishing obstacle course. But I want to start talking about real issues, real-life themes, many of which are found throughout my Black Earth series. I want to discuss how these themes came about in my series, how they can be used in Christian fiction to help build a realistic world that readers can relate too, and how these themes can be used effectively to tell a great story in general.

Themes like violence, inherited religion, slavery, sexual promiscuity, aliens, super powers, faith, etc.

A good time will be had by all. I guarantee it. I'll be diving into these themes, and exploring the many characters of Black Earth and showcasing how they fit into these themes and into real life. I may even throw in some exclusive content relating to the Black Earth series, like fiction pieces and the like. I will also be posting new Compendium entries that tie in with these posts on the website. In between it all I'll be dropping posts on other things as well, such as self-publishing, book reviews, and miscellaneous whatnot.

We'll start this party out next week when I'll be exploring Christian attitudes toward art and entertainment, looking into some of the negative stigma surrounding Christian fiction, and discussing the need for excellence in the self-publishing realm. From there, we'll head straight into a detailed look at Cynthia Ruin, a complex and broken character in my Black Earth series, and explore the theme of sexual promiscuity.

In the meantime, have a great weekend everyone!

Skydiver Leaps from 18 Miles Up in 'Space Jump' Practice

A daredevil leapt from a balloon more than 18 miles above the Earth today (July 25), moving one step closer to a so-called "space jump" that would set the record for the world's highest skydive.

Austrian adventurer?Felix Baumgartner stepped out of his custom-built capsule at an altitude of 96,640 feet (29,456 meters) above southeastern New Mexico, officials with Red Bull Stratos?? the name of Baumgartner's mission ? announced today.

In today's jump, Baumgartner experienced freefall for three minutes and 48 seconds, reaching a top speed of 536 mph (863 kph), project officials said. Baumgartner then opened his parachute and glided to Earth safely about 10 minutes and 30 seconds after stepping into the void.?

Baumgartner has his eyes on an even bigger leap, a "space jump" from 125,000 feet (38,100 m) in the next month or so. (Space, however, is generally considered to begin at an altitude of 62 miles, or 327,000 feet.)?

He's working up to this goal in stepwise fashion, having completed a jump from 71,581 feet (21,818 m) this past March. Before that, his highest-ever skydive was from 30,000 feet (9,144 m) up, team officials said.?

Today's successful leap came tantalizingly close to the current record for highest-altitude skydive, which stands at 102,800 feet (31,333 m). It was set in 1960 by U.S. Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger, who serves as an adviser for Baumgartner's Red Bull Stratos mission.

The Austrian daredevil doesn't take his leaps lightly.

"The pressure is huge, and we not only have to endure but excel," Baumgartner?told ABC News before his jump. "We're excellently prepared, but it's never going to be a fun day. I'm risking my life, after all."

Baumgartner's helium-filled balloon lifted off from Roswell, N.M. this morning and took about 90 minutes to reach the skydiver's jumping-off altitude, officials said.

Baumgartner and his team had hoped to attempt his record jump in 2010, but they were delayed by a legal challenge that claimed the idea of the dive was earlier suggested to Red Bull by California promoter Daniel Hogan. That lawsuit has since been settled out of court, and the Red Bull Stratos mission is moving forward.

Forced to think about families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky

An Internet avalanche of wrath uncovers a sexual predator and enlightens a blogger about remembering the "other" victims ? the families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / July 25, 2012

Dorothy Sandusky, wife of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, center, arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., on June 19, 2012. Jerry Sandusky was charged with 51 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

After the news of both the NCAA decision on the Penn State pedophile and Colorado massacre hit in the same week, we were so upset that most folks didn't really waste time wondering what the families of the bad guys must be feeling. Because so much compassion is expended for the dead and wounded, there isn?t much feeling left for the families of those who committed the evil act itself.

My July 23 Modern Parenthood blog on the NCAA ruling prompted a left-field response that blew my mind and prompts me to think more about the families of criminals.

In the blog, I lashed out at those at Penn State who knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky's acts as a pedophile and sex offender. And instantly, I was targeted by members of a Missouri community who linked a sex offender there with a donor to my children's chess charity. Suddenly my chess blog and YouTube videos ? part of the nonprofit organization Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) ? were slammed with outraged comments revealing that a donor to the nonprofit is a sex offender.

It was all news to me.

My best guess on how this connection was made is that people who were aware of the man?s convictions tended to look for stories slamming pedophiles and sex offenders, and it wasn?t a big leap from my Monitor blog to my chess blog and videos, which are prominently featured in the donor?s home state of Missouri where he sold brightly colored and patterned chess boards for children.

While most people might not think of chess as a child's playground, more than half of the 45 million Americans who play chess are children playing in schools and community centers. The Glos company, which donated the chessboards to my organization, was trying to strike deals with major school systems as well as the Boy Scouts which created a chess merit badge last August. So this is a very big deal to this little company.

I have never met James C. Walker in person, nor his wife Laura. It is she who owns and operates Glos Games, while he designed boards and did marketing and sales. I am told he no longer has any contact with the company.

After a series of phone calls a year ago, Laura and I became friends. Jimmy and his larger-than-life persona over the phone irritated me so badly that I just stopped dealing with him, except on rare occasions when Laura wasn't available.

The Best Home Improvement Tips To Make The Most Of Your Projects

When partaking in a large home renovation project, you should aim to have a clear vision of what you want. If the contractor feels like he or she can depend on the plans, things are likely to go much smoother. However, if the contractor does not feel confident in the plans, he or she may be afraid to do anything.

Before making renovations on your home, you should determine the amount of time you plan on living in your house. Your budget improvements will vary according to this estimate. If you plan on selling your home in the next year, you should make sure you renovate the parts of your house that interest potential home buyers.

Adding the right landscaping can really help your home?s value increase. This type of home improvement will really set off the curb appeal of your property. It takes time for landscaping to grow, but as it grows so does the profit of your home. If you do not have a lot of time you can plant mature trees. These are more expensive but you receive instant results.

If your water pressure seems low, you may need to clean the screens that are located in the head of the faucet. Unscrew the faucet head and soak the screens in a solution specifically meant for dissolving hard water build-up; white vinegar also works in a pinch. The minerals that build up on the screens can reduce the amount of water that can flow through the faucet.

You can make really neat one of a kind plant stands from old stools. You can buy some old stools from yard sales, garage sales or your local thrift shop. The older the better and the more unique your plant stand will be. Weathered stools that you use as a plant stand can add a touch of unique country to your home decor.

Look for cracks or shifting of your home?s concrete slabs or driveway. Slabs on the exterior should always be positioned so that any drainage that occurs faces away from your home?s foundation. Use crack filler to fill in any cracks, or use a silicone caulk. Next, power-wash and then seal.

To give old cabinets a face lift, consider a bold, funky effect such as crackling or even decoupage. This is a great way to change the look of your kitchen without the expense of replacing cabinets, especially those that are still in good physical condition. Just make sure to coat your handiwork with a topcoat that does not yellow over time.

If you have popcorn on your ceiling, get rid of it. The popcorn ceiling look was very popular in the 60?s and 70?s but now it just looks dated. You can find solutions that will soften the texture allowing you to scrape it away. It?s a simple change but it can really bring your house firmly into the new century.

If you have a small, cramped kitchen make sure to choose light colored cabinetry. If you go with dark cabinetry, it will make your kitchen seem even smaller. Choosing a light color, can in fact enhance your sense of space and make your kitchen seem warmer.

Keep tabs on how much you spend on your home improvements. It is really easy to nickel and dime yourself with small details and not realize how much you have totaled. A simple spreadsheet or budgeting tool will help you keep track of all this information. It will be much easier at tax time too, to be able to get all of the deductions you deserve.

Assess the condition of the paint on the exterior of your home. Old paint that is peeling can make a house look run down, driving down its value. In this case, it would be worth the investment to repaint. New exterior paint can give an old house new life and add value to the house so that you can justify a higher offer from the buyer.

As stated at the beginning of the article, people want to make home improvements for a variety of reasons. By implementing the information in this article, your home can look wonderful in no time.

Police: Colo. shooting suspect bought guns legally

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? James Holmes is accused of carrying out one of the worst mass shootings in recent U.S. history, but police say there was nothing illegal about the guns and ammunition he allegedly used during a Colorado movie theater attack.

"All the weapons that he possessed, he possessed legally," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said. "And all the clips that he possessed, he possessed legally. And all the ammunition that he possessed, he possessed legally."

The four weapons recovered following the shootings that killed 12 and left nearly 60 people injured at a suburban Denver theater were purchased by the suspect from retail gun stores in Colorado in the last two months, authorities said Friday.

A federal law enforcement officer said Holmes bought one of the four guns ? the first of two Glock pistols ? on May 22 at Gander Mountain in Aurora, Colo. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe into the shootings is ongoing.

Larry Whiteley, a Bass Pro Shops spokesman, said records show that its Denver store followed federal rules in selling a shotgun and a Glock pistol to Holmes.

"Background checks, as required by federal law, were properly conducted, and (Holmes) was approved," Whiteley said in a statement.

Gander Mountain, which sold an AR-15 assault rifle believed to be used in the shootings at a movie theater in Aurora, said the company was in compliance with state and federal laws and that it was "fully cooperating with this ongoing investigation."

A second federal law enforcement official said Holmes had a high-capacity ammunition magazine in the assault rifle. Oates said a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene.

The type of ammunition magazine Holmes is accused of using was banned for new production under the old federal assault weapon ban, said Daniel Vice, senior attorney for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

When the ban expired in 2004, gun manufacturers flooded the market with the type of high-capacity magazines Holmes used Friday, Vice said.

Oates did not specify the type of rifle but said that experts told him "with that drum magazine, he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds, even if it was semiautomatic, within one minute. And as far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater."

Oates said Holmes purchased ammunition over the Internet, including thousands of rounds and multiple magazines for the assault rifle.

Authorities have said that Holmes had on an all-black ensemble of protective gear at the time of the shooting. An online seller of tactical police gear told the St. Louis Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Pssg9H ) that it sold more than $300 of equipment, such as an assault vest, magazine pouches and a knife, to Holmes on July 2.

Chad Weinman, the CEO of Missouri-based TacticalGear.com, said Friday that Holmes had purchased two-day shipping for the items. He said the expedited timing for the items showed "some relevance as to what kind of mindset he was in." A message left after business hours Friday by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

Holmes is also believed to have hurled two gas canisters into the theater before opening fire.

Holmes' gun purchases include:

? On May 28, six days after buying the first Glock, he purchased the shotgun from Bass Pro Shops in Denver.

? On June 7, Holmes bought the AR-15 assault rifle at a Gander Mountain store in Thornton, Colo.

? On July 6, Holmes returned to the Bass Pro Shops store in Denver and bought the other Glock pistol.

How to walk on water

Secrets of cornstarch fluid unveiled

Web edition : Monday, July 16th, 2012

View the video

Dump enough cornstarch into a swimming pool, and you can walk across the water?s surface. Scientists have now revealed the secret of this YouTube party trick.

When struck by a foot, the particles suspended in the water jam together like snow piling up in front of a snowplow. The compaction forms a hard patch that can push back with the same amount of bone-crushing pressure concentrated at the tip of a high heel, researchers report in the July 12 Nature.

?If you were to punch the suspension, you might break your wrist,? says Scott Waitukaitis, a physicist at the University of Chicago who was inspired to study the goop after watching videos of people running on top of it.

Water added to equal or larger quantities of cornstarch has long been a staple of science fair demos, thanks to the mixture?s Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. A non-Newtonian fluid, it doesn?t behave like regular liquids. A hand eased into it slides in gently, without much resistance. But smack the surface hard, and it smacks back.

To understand the forces at work, the researchers struck the mix soundly with a metal rod and monitored the repercussions. Previous experiments had rubbed the material between two plates instead ? a common technique for testing the properties of liquids, but one that shears the fluid sideways instead of producing a direct impact.?

X-rays of the opaque muck revealed how the stuff moved beneath the surface. Simulations based on the data suggested that the initial impact squeezed water out of the spaces between the particles. Friction between the particles then took over. They stuck together in an expanding front that behaved like a solid, pushing back against the rod.

?I was not extremely surprised by the results,? says Daniel Bonn, a physicist at the University of Amsterdam who suspected a similar mechanism after shooting bullets into cornstarch suspensions. ?But the experiment was interesting because they?re able to look inside the cornstarch as it thickens.?

Both Bonn and Waitukaitis hope that understanding how cornstarch behaves will help other researchers who are trying to make ?liquid? body armor by soaking Kevlar in similar suspensions. But they both caution that what happens in one suspension may not happen in another.

Despite decades of study, no one yet understands why cornstarch thickens when perturbed but quicksand and ketchup thin, even though all are simply particles suspended in liquids.

An aluminum rod striking a mix of cornstarch and water fails to penetrate as particles in the ooze jam together like snow compacted by a plow.

How to Become a Home Health Care Nurse

Home Health Care Nursing Information and Overview

Home health care is allowing the patient and their family to maintain dignity and independence. According to the National Association for Home Care, there are more than 7 million individuals in the United States in need of home health care nurse services because of acute illness, long term health problems, permanent disability or terminal illness.
Home Health Care Basics
Nurses practice in a number of venues: Hospital settings, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and home health care. Home health care nursing is a growing phenomenon as more patients and their families desire to receive care in their homes. The history of home health care stems from Public Health Nursing where public health nurses made home visits to promote health education and provide treatment as part of community outreach programs. Today academic programs train nurses in home care and agencies place home health care nurses with ailing individuals and their families depending on the nurse's experience and qualifications. In many cases there is a shared relationship between the agency and the academic institution.
Many changes have taken place in the area of home health care. These include Medicare and Medicaid, and Long Term Care insurance reimbursement and documentation. It is important for the nurse and nursing agency to be aware of the many factors involved for these rules and regulations resulting from these organizations. Potion and demographic changes are taking place as well. Baby boomers approaching retirement and will present new challenges for the home health care industry. Technology and medical care in hospitals has lead to shorter inpatient stay and more at-home rehabilitation. Increases in medical outpatient procedures are also taking place with follow-up home care. This has resulted in the decrease of mortality rate from these technologies and medical care has lead to increases in morbidity and chronic illness that makes the need for home health care nursing a greater priority.
Home Health Care Nurse Job Description
Through an array of skills and experience, home health care nurses specialize in a wide range of treatments; emotional support, education of patients who are recovering from illnesses and injury for young children and adults, to women who have experienced recent childbirth, to the elderly who need palliative care for chronic illness.
A practicing nurse must have the skills to provide care in a unique setting such as someone's home. The nurse is working with the patient and the family and must understand the communication skills for such dynamics. Rapport is evident in all nursing positions, but working in a patient's own living space needs a different level of skill and understanding. There is autonomous decision making as the nurse is no longer working as a team with other nurses in a structured environment, but is now as a member of the "family" team. The host family has cultural values that are important and are different for every patient and must be treated with extreme sensitivity. Other skills include critical thinking, coordination, assessment, communication, and documentation.
Home health care nurses also specialize in the care of children with disabilities that requires additional skills such as patience and understanding of the needs of the family. Children are living with disabilities today that would have resulted in mortality just twenty years ago. Genetic disorders, congenital physical impairments, and injury are just a few. Many families are familiar with managing the needs of the child, but still need expert care that only a home health care nurse can provide. It is important that a home health care nurse is aware of the expertise of the family about the child's condition for proper care of the child. There are many complexities involved, but most important, a positive attitude and positive reinforcement is of utmost importance for the development of the child.
Medication coordination between the home health care nurse, doctor, and pharmacist, ensures proper management of the exact science behind giving the patient the correct dose, time of administration, and combinations. Home health care nurses should be familiar with pharmacology and taught in training about different medications used by patients in the clinical setting.
Many advanced practicing nurses are familiar with medication regiments. They have completed graduate level programs. Home health care agencies believe that a nurse should have at least one year of clinical experience before entering home health care. Advanced practicing nurses can expedite that training by helping new nurses understand the home health care market and teaching.
Employment and Salary
According to the United States Department of Labor, there were 2.4 million nurses in America, the largest healthcare occupation, yet many academic and hospital organizations believe there is a gross shortage in nursing staff. The shortage of nurses was 6% in 2000 and is expected to be 10% in 2010. The average salary for hospital nursing is $53,450 with 3 out of 5 nursing jobs are in the hospital. For home health care, the salary is $49,000. For nursing care facilities, they were the lowest at $48,200.
Training and continuing education
Most home health care nurses gain their education through accredited nursing schools throughout the country with an associate degree in nursing (ADN), a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN), or a master's degree in nursing (MSN). According to the United States Department of Labor, in 2004 there were 674 BSN nursing programs, 846 ADN programs. Also, in 2004, there were 417 master's degree programs, 93 doctoral programs, and 46 joint BSN-doctoral programs. The associate degree program takes 2 to 3 years to complete, while bachelors degrees take 4 years to complete. Nurses can also earn specialized professional certificates online in Geriatric Care or Life Care Planning.
In addition, for those nurses who choose to pursue advancement into administrative positions or research, consulting, and teaching, a bachelor's degree is often essential. A bachelor's degree is also important for becoming a clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004).
All home health care nurses have supervised clinical experience during their training, but as stated earlier advanced practicing nurses hold master's degrees and unlike bachelor and associate degrees, they have a minimum of two years of post clinical experience. Course work includes anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, psychology, and behavioral sciences and liberal arts. Many of these programs have training in nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory clinics. (U.S. Dep. of Labor, 2004).
Whether a nurse is training in a hospital, nursing facility, or home care, continuing education is necessary. Health care is changing rapidly and staying abreast with the latest developments enhances patient care and health procedures. Universities, continuing education programs, and internet sites, all offer continuing education. One such organization that provides continuing education is the American Nurses Association (ANA) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Insurance company says it will not cover fracking | Opinion Blog

?Next month, the?Dallas City Council will have to decide whether to allow fracking?within Dallas city limits ? an?issue that has split communities all across the nation. ?

They may want to take the temperature of the insurance industry. Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. has become the first major insurance company to say it won?t cover damage related to fracking.

?As I interpret? the? insurance company?s position, fracking will be considered a ?prohibited risk,?? meaning that if? John Q. Landowner allows drilling on his property, then he?may not be covered from damage from fracking.?The dynamics and economics?of the? fracking debate? would? change if other insurers follow this lead.

?What do I mean??To date, the argument, against fracking in urban areas has revolved around noise, general safety concerns posed by?an industrial use close to homes,??possible groundwater contamination and impact on?property values.

?Until now, we really haven?t heard from the insurance industry. So does this mean that? if an earthquake from?an?injection well? damages?a?foundation that the repairs won?t be covered? Will insurers treat coverage?not on an individual basis but as a zone, which is the way they treat coverage of earthquakes and floods, if they offer it at all.

The?drilling? industry?s response has been to call the announcement ?reckless? and it is so unusual that?enviromentalists ?aren?t sure what to make?of, either.??I?quickly looked?at the?insurer?s website for the actual wording of the statement and ironically it doesn?t seem to be there. They story is moving all over the Internet and I?ve not seen anything of a reaction or clarification from ?Nationwide.? I?ve e-mailed them?for elaboration and will post whatever I receive.??????

?Nonetheless, this should be something the Dallas City Council needs to think about? as it considers fracking rules in August.?At the very least, it is?another reason? for Dallas to say ?no? to injection wells?,which recent studies link to the run of?earthquakes in North Texas.????????????????????????

How Can Autoresponders Be Of Benefit To Your Business | Dave In ...

It would be excellent if you could find a cheap tool for online marketing which automatically establishes and builds a list of potential customers. Yes, I?m talking about an autoresponder. If you want a tool to build your customer and prospect list, nothing is better than an autoresponder. It?s really easy working with them, as you just need to set them up once and see it in action by pasting a web form on your page for people to subscribe. When you set up your autoresponder, all you have to do is create your autoresponder messages, and everything runs smooth from there. Reading this article will make it easier for you to comprehend the entire process of setting it up. Yes, business on the net migrated from offline, but that does not mean everything is the same. Those who are experienced fully realize the net is a highly dynamic environment and much more than the offline, for the most part. You need to be prepared as much as you can be so if something does suddenly impact your business you can respond quickly. If Guru Product Blueprints is possibly something you can include with the way you promote, then that is a positive but think about what that could possibly mean in terms of the long term. You need to think long-term regarding methods, techniques and similar items to make sure the impact is favorable and will not put you on thin ice. Everything you do when you are marketing and advertising your business puts you on the line to some degree, but that is just the nature of business.

To start with, you have to use a combination of information and your sales pitch when working with an autoresponder. The key to increasing profit is to develop the correct balance between the product or service you want to sell and what you decide to just give to the consumer. It may take some time to figure out what the right mix is for your business. But once you do, stick with it. Timing is everything. So you want to pay close attention of when you send out automatic emails to announce things such as updates, newsletters or podcasts. You definitely do not want potential customers complaining that they?re being hit with emails all the time. Make sure to respect their privacy and space, and make your posts more intermittent. In other words, help them remember you but in a considerate way. So just use your common sense when using this combination technique with your autoresponder, so that you can get the most out of your marketing campaigns. Because of the symbiotic nature of your autoresponder and the rest of your business, your marketing strategies will have to undergo some revisions. Also, make sure your marketing efforts are given the personal touch that will set you apart from other spam your customers may receive. Give it a human touch, make it real. Avoid anything that sounds artificial or too impersonal. One way to do this is to use your subscriber?s first name in the address of your ezine or newsletter. Always listen to what your customers are chatting about and learn what they want so you can make sure that you are satisfying their needs. It is also good practice to give them a variety of options when it comes to personalizing their email subscriptions and this will make them much more comfortable when dealing with you.

If you?re not careful, you can lose value by using autoresponsders to deliver your information by automated message ? you don?t want to let that occur. You want your customers to want to receive your mail, which happens to be one of the most important factors to growing a successful business. Give them what they want, and they will give you what you need. It will be tough to turn them into customers without giving something of substantial value away. Don?t just go on about the particular service or product you?re selling; that?s trying to hard, and that turns people off. When you give them information they want and need, you?ll keep them happy and eager to remain your subscriber. They need to know how much you value them. Don?t forget you should have something that motivates your prospects and at the same time you are advising them on what their next step needs to be. It could be anything you want your subscribers to do. Very simply, if you don?t ask, they won?t buy.

What the Rock-Paper-Scissors Bot Says About Human-Robotics Interactions

It was a rock-paper-scissors robot, but the perception component of it wasn't nearly as fast. So we couldn't basically do what they're doing now, which is to change the robots hand position before the person could possibly even notice and react. We were looking at a robot that was actually being tele-operated, so a person in another room was controlling the robot. What we were interested in was, what would happen when the robot would cheat?

So someone would come in, they would play about 15 hands of RPS, and get relatively bored with this little humanoid robot. Then, one of three things would happen. In one case, nothing special would happen?it would just keep on playing and continue to be boring. In the second case, what we call the verbal condition, the robot would throw a gesture, lose, and then declare itself the winner. "I win." It would incorrectly claim victory when it had actually lost. When people saw that, they thought the robot was malfunctioning. They were a little confused, but it didn't change the way they responded to it. It was still a boring mechanical construct.

The third case was the interesting one. In that, the robot would lose, but then quickly change its gesture?which was easily noticeable?and then declare itself the winner. And people immediately thought the robot was cheating, no one thought it was broken or malfunctioning, and they suddenly started attributing all sorts of animacy and intentionality to the robot. They thought the robot was smarter, a better player, more interesting, more fun, they thought it was better looking also, I can't explain why. But... the robot just became much more interesting to them. They started treating it as if it were a social agent, and not a mechanical device. When they talked about it afterwards, they used personal pronouns. They used "he" or "she" instead of "it."

Darien girl gives up Hawaii to help tornado victims

RAINSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Instead of basking in the sun on a beach in Hawaii during her spring break in April, 12-year-old Logan Etheredge, of Darien, spent a week with her family rebuilding houses in DeKalb County damaged by the April 27, 2011, tornadoes.

Logan convinced her family to change their Hawaii vacation plans to work on a church mission trip in Northeast Alabama.

That's right -- a seventh-grader chose a vacation of hammers and nails, power tools and removing debris, over a beach chair and softly breaking waves.

Logan said she always had wanted to go on a mission trip and when her church, Noroton Presbyterian, decided last year to come to DeKalb County during this year's spring break to help with rebuilding efforts, she knew she wanted to go.

And since her younger brother, Grayson, 10, was now old enough to go, Logan said she began talking to her parents about going on their first mission trip as a family.

"I just always felt that mission work was something I want to do," Logan said, "I've always been interested in getting involved and helping, and so I thought Alabama would be good starter for me. Mission work just seems like the right choice, especially since it's a good change, and you can help spread the word of Jesus and you can just really open up to a lot of people."

There was one problem. Her parents were considering a family trip to Hawaii during that time.

Oh well. Time to start packing the bathing suit and suntan lotion.

Not Logan. She really, really wanted to go on this mission trip.

"I did a lot of begging, that's for sure," she said.

Logan knew she would need a great argument to win her parents over, and her parents thought if they kept mentioning the Hawaii trip, she would give up.

They were wrong. Logan developed two PowerPoint presentations outlining the pros and cons of each trip.

"I may have been a little unfair to Hawaii by saying the only pro was to get a tan," she admitted.

"At the end of each PowerPoint, I put `what would Jesus do.' I think that was one of the guilt factors that really won them over," she said.

Logan kept asking that every day, and her parents finally relented.

Her father, Elliott, said his daughter's desire to go on the trip eventually won them over.

He said parents always try to push kids in the right direction, to give them a moral compass and instill discipline. "When it starts coming from your kid to you as a parent, especially when she's 12 years old, you can't say no," he said.

Mother Julie added, "When it has to do with helping others, that's right. ... Our actions speak louder than our words -- saying `do good' when you could go do it, too."

Logan said it's been a great experience and she's looking forward to future trips.

"At first I thought I would wish I was on the beach," she said. "But now I see it's really great, an awesome experience. I loved it. I had so much fun."

At one site, she helped rebuild a porch. "I got to use some power tools," she said.

Logan said she enjoyed picking up debris and to tried to imagine it as part of the house and what it was used for.

Grayson was in favor of Hawaii and thought Logan was crazy to pass up a vacation there.

"I couldn't believe she would give up Hawaii for the mission trip," he said. "Now that I'm on one, it's a lot of fun."

He said he'd like to do another mission trip, but he still missed Hawaii.

Both parents said they also have enjoyed the trip, and that the family is likely to go on other mission trips. "You definitely feel like you have a purpose when you're here," Elliott said.

He said their children saw the rough shape the tornado-damaged area remains in, and the progress the group made in "putting the pieces back together."

But is Hawaii still in the future for the Etheredge family?

"Oh yeah," Elliott said. "We've been very clear with Logan, no PowerPoints this time."

Asian markets higher on Wall Street, Europe lead

Asian markets mostly rose on Wednesday following a lead from Wall Street and Europe and amid rising hopes that central banks are poised to act to boost economic growth.

But the euro weakened before a European Central Bank meeting Thursday as traders waited to see if the bank would back a deal to help the eurozone, and oil slipped back after rising in the United States on Iranian sabre-rattling.

Tokyo closed up 0.41 percent, or 37.58 points, at 9,104.17, its highest finish in about two months, while Sydney was up 1.09 percent, or 45.0 points, to end at 4,172.2, led by mining and resources stocks.

Seoul finished 0.35 percent, or 6.63 points, higher at 1,874.45.

Hong Kong ended 0.13 percent, or 25.78 points, lower to closeat 19,709.75, with the fall driven by profit-taking after recent gains.

Shanghai was flat, edging down 0.08 percent, or 1.87 points, to close at 2,227.32 as traders took to the sidelines before next week's release of key economic data for June.

Investors are pinning their hopes on a new round of stimulus measures, known as quantitative easing, from the US Federal Reserve, after weak manufacturing data this week added to concerns about the world's biggest economy.

They are looking to Friday when the US government releases its highly anticipated June job growth and unemployment numbers, with the data expected to encourage the Fed to implement more policy easing, dealers said.

Eurozone data, which showed unemployment at a euro-era high of 11.1 percent and weak manufacturing activity, has raised hopes that the ECB will cut its rate from the current record low of 1.0 percent to stem the bloc's debt crisis.

"Macro factors are the market movers right now, with everyone expecting more rate cuts and currency printing," said CLSA equity strategist Nicholas Smith.

Daniel Brdanovic, HSBC New Zealand chief manager, told Dow Jones Newswires that markets were expecting the ECB to trim rates but the bank's statement would also be closely watched.

"Markets will be looking to see whether the ECB comes out to support what the European leaders came out with last week," he said.

European leaders agreed at a key summit in Brussels last week to use emergency funds to recapitalise ailing banks directly. They also agreed to contribute $150 billion to boost growth.

US stocks were boosted on Tuesday by a report showing strong factory orders for May and robust June sales from leading American automakers.

In a trading session that ended early before the July 4 Independence Day holiday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.56 percent, the S&P added 0.62 percent, while the tech-rich Nasdaq put on 0.84 percent.

In early European trade Wednesday, the euro bought $1.2582 and 100.41 yen, against $1.2607 and 100.64 yen in US trade Tuesday. The dollar stood at 79.78 yen, from 79.83 yen in New York.

Oil prices slipped following a strong rally in the United States after Iran test-fired missiles and Iranian lawmakers backed a draft bill calling for the key Strait of Hormuz to be closed to oil tankers in retaliation for an EU oil embargo.

In afternoon Asian trade, New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in August fell 55 cents to $87.11 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for August delivery shed 61 cents to $100.07.

Gold was at $1,616.50 an ounce at 1055 GMT, compared with $1,609.00 an ounce late Tuesday.

The accidental performer: A walk in Olympic Park

LONDON (AP) ? I didn't mean to crash a top-secret rehearsal for the London Olympics opening ceremony. I was just trying to validate my credentials before the Olympic Park was mobbed. If I am hauled into some sports court and you never hear from me again, here's my minute-by-minute defense.

___

11:10 a.m.

On train to park, hit by inspiration. What if I buy a pedometer at the sprawling mall that leads to the Olympic Park, count the vast number of steps between all the Olympic venues and warn visitors to leave their high heels at home? Brilliant! Public service journalism the Pulitzer committee cannot ignore.

11:35 a.m.

At an Olympics operations center near Stratford train station. After 17 minutes it is established that I am not in the computer. After 27 minutes it is discovered I am not an Olympic truck driver. After 31 minutes I am dismissed, sent on an alleged 20-minute walk to a different validation counter ? the one for journalists not drivers.

12:44 p.m.

A momentary setback in the mall when the 20-something clerk at the Sweatshop running store mixes up my weight in kilograms with my height in centimeters while programming the pedometer I just bought. "That's why I didn't go to uni (university)!" he says. Mental note: Future story on the British education system.

12:57 p.m.

The mall wing that leads to the Olympic entrance is blocked off so police in forensic suits can investigate a stabbing death from the night before. "Prada is closed?!!" an Asian shopper asks a British policeman in a traditional bobby helmet. "All day," he says. She looks distraught.

1:10 p.m.

Getting hungry. Seventy restaurants to choose from and I order fish and chips. Is that wrong? My tummy doesn't think so.

2:09 p.m.

Walk 637 steps to next mall exit. Realize it's July sales ? only time in London that reporters can afford to buy! Stop by Hobbs and leave with a linen dress, 58 percent off.

2:20 p.m.

Finally reach Olympic Park. Kindly security guy asks to see credential. Will be the only one of 15 security workers I talk to today who does.

2:25 p.m.

Through security, no questions about Hobbs sale bag. Quite a number of people flowing south to Olympic Stadium. Media center is north, but since much of the park is blocked off by barriers, helpful security guy tells me to go around the stadium.

2:35 p.m.

It's 621 steps to the Orbit tower next to Olympic Stadium. Of course its observation desk is closed. I am a magnet for closed tourist hotspots. Still, I quite like its smashed train-wreck design.

2: 40 p.m.

Realize the path is leading into the stadium, not around. Turn back against the tide. Speak to woman with walkie-talkie in purple Olympics jacket. "You are not a performer?" she asks in dismay. No, not unless director Danny Boyle is looking for a rubenesque 50-something to portray Mother Earth.

2:41 p.m.

She walks me back to front of stadium, criticizing guard for not noticing my lack of a visible credential. He shrugs. "He keeps letting people in!" she says. Mental note: Switch focus of story to Olympic security.

Suddenly 23,700 security agents and 12,000 police doesn't quite seem enough.

We chat. She says 2,000 performers are expected today for the secret rehearsal, 10,000 in all for the opening ceremony. I am aghast. Clearly she is too young to know the British WWII mantra of "loose lips sink ships." She would be mincemeat ? MINCEMEAT ? in the hands of a British reporter, some of whom have wired shirts, tiny cameras, bags of cash and honorary PhDs in phone hacking. At this rate, pirates will have the entire video out within days.

3:10 p.m.

Still walking north. Nice creek, guess it used to be a sewage mudflat before the Olympics came in. Pretty batch of outdoor Olympic tiles. I ask the lone guard what the area is for, she doesn't know. "They don't tell us anything," she says.

3:17 p.m.

Call our London Olympics beat reporter. No, she hadn't heard about the rehearsal. She is groggy after a sleepover in the Athletes Village, where road crews woke her up at 3:30 a.m. I send 130 words on the rehearsal to our editing desk to tell the world.

3:30 p.m.

Stumble into the field hockey validation tent. Bad memories of when the nuns at my high school tried to teach me the sport. Why can you only hold the stick on one side? Not the right place again. Kindly workers give me a map, confirm that media validation center is practically in Siberia.

3:45 p.m.

Helpful security guy in parking lot confirms: Go down the street, up the stairs, across the walkway over the road, through two sets of doors, into the parking lot, down the far stairs, across several bus terminal lanes and you are there. I take pictures of posters about forbidden items. Luckily am not trying to smuggle a rabid cat into the U.K.

4:19 p.m.

Oh dear. I now hear Olympic honchos hate details about opening ceremonies getting out. Possible yanking of credential. What? I'm not even validated yet.

4:20 p.m.

At the validation center, six bored staffers come to life amid rows of empty lines. Someone to process! They debate who gets to do it. I mention the phrase "Siberia," they heartily agree. Process takes 15 seconds. I snap their picture. Head over to see AP's Olympic office, but it's not open yet. At least it's right by the snack counter.

5:10 p.m.

Walking back, take picture of Olympic Stadium. Whoa, heavy clouds overhead. Good luck with that British weather for the games.

5:15 p.m.

Soaring classical music suddenly emanates from the stadium. A rousing chorus. A fierce clash of drums. These can't be state secrets. British bookies probably don't even take bets on drums at opening ceremonies, too sure an outcome.

6:40 p.m.

Off train, glance at pedometer. 12,765 steps.

Oh yeah. Got an Olympic workout.
