Economic data shows eurozone steadier, still weak

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The euro area's economy is showing modest signs of improvement, as new figures Wednesday indicated more consumer optimism and steadier bank finances. Weak demand for bank loans, however, made it clear the recovery was still some way off.

The European Union's economic sentiment indicator, which mixes business and consumer outlooks, rose by 1.4 points in January to 89.2 for the 17 EU countries that use the euro. It was the third straight monthly increase. The jump was fed by increased confidence among consumers and from businesses in the construction and service sectors of the economy.

Meanwhile, sentiment in industry and the retail trade remained broadly flat.

The survey is one hopeful sign as the eurozone struggles to get out of a recession that saw its economy shrink in the second and third quarters of 2012. A drawn-out crisis over too much government debt is weighing on growth as countries cut back on spending to reduce their deficits.

Nonetheless, the sentiment indicator remains well below its long term average of 100 for 1999-2012. And much of the improvement in consumer sentiment came from just one country, Germany.

The data mean that the eurozone probably bottomed out in October and that "growth prospects are brightening, " IHS Global Insight analyst Howard Archer said. Still, he said it "remains to be seen to what extent and how quickly this will feed through to boost eurozone economic activity.

The European Central Bank expects the economy to shrink 0.3 percent throughout the course of 2013, but to make a modest recovery later on in the year.

Bank lending data from the ECB confirmed Wednesday that the recovery remains a ways off. Its quarterly lending survey, released Wednesday showed a "pronounced net decline" in business loan demand in the last three months of last year. The main reason: Companies are not seeing a need to finance new fixed investment such as buildings and machinery, a key component of any economic recovery.

The survey also shows banks continue to tighten credit standards.

The ECB survey of senior loan officers at 131 banks indicated that the banking system is on a steadier footing. Banks are now reporting better access to funds from deposits and borrowing.

Banks, key to growth as suppliers of credit, were hit hard during the eurozone debt crisis by losses on government bonds. This made it harder for them to borrow from other banks and bond investors due to fears they might not pay the money back.

Banks are also facing regulators' demands to hold back more money as a financial buffer against losses. These requirements can also mean less money available to lend out.

Eurozone financial markets have been more stable since the ECB offered to buy bonds issued by indebted countries in the secondary market if those countries promise to reduce their deficits. That offer has lowered government borrowing costs although no bonds have actually been bought.

The improvement on stock and bond markets, however, has yet to be seen in the wider economy.

Stocks Turn Positive; 3D Systems Hits New High ... - Investors.com

Stocks turned moderately positive at midafternoon Tuesday, as each main index traded near its best level for the session.

The Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 both gained 0.3%. The Nasdaq edged up a fraction, after spending most of the day in the red. Volume remained down from Friday's levels, which were boosted by options expirations.

3D Systems (DDD) climbed 4% in strong volume, hitting a fresh all-time high. The maker of 3D printers could be getting a lift from a couple of banks raising their price targets for shares. 3D Systems, No. 1 in the latest IBD 50 lineup, is extended from its last proper buying range. Rival Stratasys also has touched a new peak,

SodaStream International (SODA) was up less than 1% in big turnover, but it had popped as much as 6% intraday. The move had taken SodaStream past a 50.08 buy point from a three-weeks-tight pattern. It's now back below that trigger. The Israeli maker of in-home soda machines has been earning spots in the IBD 50 lineup and IBD's Stock Spotlight screen. It was featured in a Stock Spotlight column in Monday's IBD.

In M&A news, Dell (DELL) rose 3% as published reports said Microsoft (MSFT) might invest $1 billion to $3 billion as part of a leveraged buyout of the ailing PC maker. Dell regained its 200-day moving average last week amid buyout chatter, but it still remains nearly 30% off its February peak. Microsoft fell a fraction. It's also consolidating below its 200-day line.

On the earnings front, Google (GOOG) pulled back a fraction in strong volume ahead of its quarterly report after the market's close. Analysts see EPS up 11% to $10.52, as sales rise 52% to $12.36 billion. Google, which has been consolidating since October, has lifted off support at its 50-day moving average.

In economic news, existing-home sales slowed to an annualized rate of 4.94 million in December, according to the National Association of Realtors. That was below forecasts for 5.1 million and down from November's 5.04 million pace.

Toothy tumor found in Roman corpse

In a necropolis in Spain, archaeologists have found the remains of a Roman woman who died in her 30s with a calcified tumor in her pelvis, a bone and four deformed teeth embedded within it.

Two of the teeth are still attached to the wall of the tumor researchers say.

The woman, who died some 1,600 years ago, had a condition known today as an ovarian teratoma which, as its name indicates, occurs in the ovaries. The word Teratoma comes from the Greek words "teras" and "onkoma" which translate to "monster" and "swelling," respectively. The tumor is about 1.7 inches (44 millimeters) in diameter at its largest point.

"Ovarian teratomas are bizarre, but benign tumors," writes lead researcher N?ria Armentano, of the ANTROP?LEGS.LAB company and the Universitat Aut?noma de Barcelona, in an email to LiveScience.

The tumors come from germ cells, which form human eggs and can create hair, teeth and bone, among other structures. [ See Images of Bizarre Tumor & Remains ]

This is the first time scientists have found this type of teratoma in the ancient world.

"(T)his is an extraordinary case, not only for its antiquity, but also its identification in the archeological record," writes the research team in a paper published recently in the International Journal of Paleopathology.

The woman lived at a time of decline for the Roman Empire, with new groups (popularly known as the "barbarians") moving into Roman territory, eventually taking over Spain and other areas.

Who was she?
Archaeologists found the woman buried in a necropolis near Lleida in the Catalonia region of Spain. They only found a few artifacts buried with her: tiles known as tegulae that had been put over her body to form a gabled roof.

"Tegulae graves were the most common Roman burials. She was not an important or rich person. She had a low socioeconomic status," Armentano explained.

The researchers note in their paper that while it's possible the woman never experienced symptoms, it's also possible that, despite the tumor being benign, it ultimately killed her.

"This ovarian teratoma could have been the cause of this woman's death, because sometimes the development of teratomas results in displacement and functional disturbances of adjacent organs," the researchers write. They note that infection, hemolytic anemia and pregnancy complications can also occur with an ovarian teratoma, events that could also have caused the woman's death.

The tumor would not have changed her outward appearance, and researchers can't tell for certain what affect it had on her, Armentano explained.

"We suppose that, at least during a long part of her life, she was completely unaware of this tumor. Depending on the eventual complications, she could have suffered, but there" is no evidence of this, writes Armentano. "She could have died because of many other causes!"

Despite that uncertainty, historical records do indicate that this woman lived in a time period of great change. King's College London Professor Peter Heather notes in his book "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Oxford University Press, 2006) that, by A.D. 411, Spain had been divided between groups known as the Vandals, Suevi and Alans.

The ancient writer Hydatius wrote that the "Spaniards in the cities and forts who had survived the disasters surrendered themselves to servitude under the barbarians, who held sway throughout the provinces."

NASA, ESA telescopes find evidence for asteroid belt around Vega

Jan. 8, 2013 ? Astronomers have discovered what appears to be a large asteroid belt around the star Vega, the second brightest star in northern night skies. The scientists used data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, in which NASA plays an important role.

The discovery of an asteroid belt-like band of debris around Vega makes the star similar to another observed star called Fomalhaut. The data are consistent with both stars having inner, warm belts and outer, cool belts separated by a gap. This architecture is similar to the asteroid and Kuiper belts in our own solar system.

What is maintaining the gap between the warm and cool belts around Vega and Fomalhaut? The results strongly suggest the answer is multiple planets. Our solar system's asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter, is maintained by the gravity of the terrestrial planets and the giant planets, and the outer Kuiper belt is sculpted by the giant planets.

"Our findings echo recent results showing multiple-planet systems are common beyond our sun," said Kate Su, an astronomer at the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Su presented the results Tuesday at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, Calif., and is lead author of a paper on the findings accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Vega and Fomalhaut are similar in other ways. Both are about twice the mass of our sun and burn a hotter, bluer color in visible light. Both stars are relatively nearby, at about 25 light-years away. The stars are thought to be around 400 million years old, but Vega could be closer to its 600 millionth birthday. Fomalhaut has a single candidate planet orbiting it, Fomalhaut b, which orbits at the inner edge of its cometary belt.

The Herschel and Spitzer telescopes detected infrared light emitted by warm and cold dust in discrete bands around Vega and Fomalhaut, discovering the new asteroid belt around Vega and confirming the existence of the other belts around both stars. Comets and the collisions of rocky chunks replenish the dust in these bands. The inner belts in these systems cannot be seen in visible light because the glare of their stars outshines them.

Both the inner and outer belts contain far more material than our own asteroid and Kuiper belts. The reason is twofold: the star systems are far younger than our own, which has had hundreds of millions more years to clean house, and the systems likely formed from an initially more massive cloud of gas and dust than our solar system.

The gap between the inner and outer debris belts for Vega and Fomalhaut also proportionally corresponds to the distance between our sun's asteroid and Kuiper belts. This distance works out to a ratio of about 1:10, with the outer belt 10 times farther from its host star than the inner belt. As for the large gap between the two belts, it is likely there are several undetected planets, Jupiter-size or smaller, creating a dust-free zone between the two belts. A good comparison star system is HR 8799, which has four known planets that sweep up the space between two similar disks of debris.

"Overall, the large gap between the warm and the cold belts is a signpost that points to multiple planets likely orbiting around Vega and Fomalhaut," said Su.

If unseen planets do, in fact, orbit Vega and Fomalhaut, these bodies will not likely stay hidden.

"Upcoming new facilities such as NASA's James Webb Space Telescope should be able to find the planets," said paper co-author Karl Stapelfeldt, chief of the Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Lawyer: Trio charged in India rape to plead not guilty

By NBC News wire services

NEW DELHI -- Three of the men accused of raping and murdering an Indian student in a moving bus will plead not guilty to the charges, their lawyer said on Wednesday, citing lapses in the police investigation.

Five men have been charged for the assault on the woman in a case that has provoked such outrage that lawyers in the district where the case is being heard have refused to defend the men.

Manohar Lal Sharma, who will represent the bus driver and the main accused, his brother and another man, said the case must go to trial so that the evidence police have presented can be tested in court.

"We are only hearing what the police are saying. This is manipulated evidence. It's all on the basis of hearsay and presumption," said Sharma.

It is not yet known if two other accused men have a lawyer, while a sixth accused will be tried separately because he is a minor.

Five men, accused of the rape and murder of a medical student in India have appeared in court. If convicted they face the death penalty. The attack on a bus three weeks ago sparked outrage and violent protests in the country. ITV's Geraint Vincent reports.

The five defendants are scheduled to appear at another pre-trial hearing on Thursday that is expected to result in the case being sent to a special "fast-track" court. Indian courts are notoriously slow, with some cases dragging on for decades.?

Authorities have charged the men with murder, rape and other crimes that could bring them the death penalty. The crime caused nationwide outrage, leading to massive protests.

Blood stains
A sixth suspect, who is 17 years old, is expected to be tried in a juvenile court, where the maximum sentence would be three years in a reform facility.

Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said last week that a DNA test confirmed that the blood of the victim matched blood stains found on the clothes of all the accused.

On Sunday, two of the defendants offered to become "approvers," or informers against the others, according to reporters present at the hearing. The two were presumably seeking lighter sentences.

The companion of the student recounted in a television interview last week how the pair was attacked for 2 1/2 hours on a New Delhi bus before being thrown on the side of the road, where passersby ignored them and police debated jurisdiction issues before helping them. The student died at a Singapore hospital weeks after the Dec. 16 attack.

The attack has led to calls for tougher rape laws and reforms of a police culture that often blames rape victims and refuses to file charges against accused attackers. The nation's top law enforcement official said the country needs to crack down on crimes against women.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
