Let?s talk about celebrity fitness tactics. Are you inspired by magazine stories about?celebrities? fitness?short cuts? Are you envious of the sculpted physiques of movie stars? If you answered yes, or if you simply wish to learn a few insider celebrity secrets, then keep reading because I?m going to share some celebrity fitness tactics with you!
First, let me assure you that you don?t need to have a full-time nutritionist or fitness trainer on hand to achieve your own celebrity fitness status. Hard work and dedication are the keys to success to achieve your dream body.
Here are my some dos and don?ts of four common celebrity fitness tactics. We are all celebrities in our own lives so let me help you get started on your own path toward achieving your personal celebrity fitness goals.
Don?t:?Resort to using any dangerous nutritional tactics. Many celebrities rely on last minute plans to get ready for their big screen debut, and with a few million dollars at stake combined with the promise of fame, it?s not surprising that they will go to extreme measures. Engaging in practices such as long arduous cleanses and starvation is a terrible tactic, unless directed to so by a physician.
Why: Any extreme dietary measure will only give you temporary results. There are many health risks associated with extreme low calorie diets, and the long term health risks are just not worth a temporary slim waist.
Do: Take a good look inside your kitchen cupboards and reassess your eating habits. Finding your own personal caloric balance that allows you to lose weight while still providing your body with essential nutrients is the best and safest way to slim down. Take a look at Susan Bowerman?s short video showing what 100 calories can look like so that you can start to make informed food choices.
Don?t: Jump straight into a seven days/week intense exercise routine. I can hear you sigh out loud with this advice because we always think that more is better. However, this is not always the case when it comes to fitness. Yes, headlines might say your favorite celebrity worked out twice a day for hours at a time while eating like a mouse but what they don?t share is the pain and suffering that often accompanies such intensive schedules. Many rely on pain relief medicines and I?ve read of many cases where celebrities are hospitalized for exhaustion. Just because something appears to provide magical results don?t be too quick to believe it because, chances are, it?s just another temporary fix. Trust me when I say there is no quick fix.
Do: Steadily increase your fitness routine, because in order to get continued results you must increase your workouts. Our bodies are very good at adapting to increased physical demands. When something starts to feel easy then work a little harder. If you are new to exercise, start out by focusing on your exercise duration. As you become fitter, you can begin to adapt the intensity of your workouts to get more results in less time.
Don?t: Buy every new gimmick or fitness tool or believe that you can wrap yourself into a state of improved fitness with bandages or shaking machines. It?s easy to think that just because there is a fit celebrity on the box, then it must work. However, it?s highly likely that the cover model prepared for the photo shoot with traditional fitness techniques first!
Why: Gadgets can look much more appealing than the hard work and sweat associated with exercise, but honestly ask yourself this question: when can you achieve anything without doing some hard work first?
Do: Invest in some inexpensive fitness essentials such as hand weights, resistance bands and a yoga mat. There are many incredible new tools on the fitness market that work, but before buying, assess each new tool and try to see how practical they really are. If they are based on the general principals of fitness such as cardio, flexibility, endurance or strength, they may be worth a second look. Alternatively, if they promise improved fitness from standing still, they will most likely waste your time and money.
Don?t: Spend more money than you can comfortably afford on a gym membership or a personal trainer. Just because the stars do it doesn?t mean that regular folk need to spend a fortune each month.
Why: If you choose something that you can?t afford ? and even worse don?t use ? then it?s too easy to drop the gym membership deciding that fitness is too much effort and costs too much. That needn?t be the case ? a jog around the park or an at-home workout routine can help build fitness just as much as an exclusive gym. I fully believe in the power of personal training, but some insider advice will suffice if you can?t afford one.
Do:?Discuss your financial situation with a trainer and work out a sustainable plan to get you in peak shape. If you have a set budget, let your trainer know because most of the time they will find a way to work with you. As fitness trainers it is our job to teach you the basics, help you stay motivated and most importantly help you to train safely.?A good trainer will help you transition to working out on your own.
?***
I admire celebrity physiques and appreciate the hard work and effort they put in to maintain their look. But remember that looks can be deceiving and the external is not always an indication of good health. That?s why I suggest finding your own inner movie star using the best plan of all: a consistently good diet and a consistent activity plan. Now, tell me how you channel your own movie star in the comments section below!

The new Nexus 7 tablet might be hitting the U.S. before the end of July, but consumers in the UK could be in for a substantially longer wait if one major retailer is to be believed. Currys and PC World, both parts of the Dixons group, are listing the 16 and 32-gigabyte versions of the tablet for pre-order, priced at £199.99 and £239.99 respectively. But the tablets are listed with an availability date of Sep. 13, some six weeks after the U.S. launch.
While pre-order dates are subject to change, Currys and PC World were retail launch partners for the 2012 Nexus 7, so there's a good chance they aren't just pulling this date out of thin air. There's also no sign of the European 4G Nexus 7, so UK buyers wanting to take advantage of LTE data on the new tablet could be in for an even longer wait.
We've heard nothing specific about international availability from Google, and at yesterday's launch event the company told attendees that other countries would be getting the tablet "in the coming weeks." The UK was named as one of the first wave of countries to get the new tablet following the U.S. launch, along with Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Canada, France and Australia.
Meanwhile the UK Google Play Store continues to list last year's Nexus 7, with prices starting at £159 for 16GB + Wifi.

A 28-year-old mother was identified as the second victim of a triple homicide in a Cleveland suburb where the bodies of three women were found wrapped in plastic bags.
Authorities on Tuesday identified Shetisha Sheeley, 28, as the woman whose body was recovered in a grassy field in East Cleveland on Saturday. Sheeley had been missing since September and has a 12-year-old daughter, NBC?s Cleveland affiliate WKYC reports.
A member of the public called authorities to help identify Sheeley based on information released about one of her tattoos.
Sheeley?s mother told The Plain Dealer newspaper that her daughter largely kept to herself and was surprised to learn her body was found in East Cleveland.
"I don't know what she was [doing] in East Cleveland because she did not live in East Cleveland,"? she told the newspaper.
A day earlier, police identified another of the three victims as 38-year-old Angela Deskins, who was found in the basement of an abandoned home.
Both women were residents of Cleveland. The third victim has not yet been identified and no cause of death has been released for any of the women.
In a statement to WKYC, Deskins? sister, Catana Deskins, said: ?Angela Deskins was a beautiful, sweet, kind hearted woman?Everyone who knew her loved her. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and aunt who truly cared about her family and friends. She is loved so much and will be missed by everyone who knew her.?

Registered sex offender Michael Madison, 35, appears in court at his bond hearing in East Cleveland, Ohio, USA on 22 July 2013. Madison is the suspect in the killing of at least three women whose bodies were found in East Cleveland, Ohio, USA on 19 July 2013 and 20 July 2013. Police and volunteers searched the neighborhood of run-down and vacant houses on 21 July but found no additional bodies.
East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said at the news conference Tuesday that he has known the Deskins family and said they were always supportive of Angela.
Shortly after the discovery of the first body on Friday, police arrested 35-year-old Michael Madison. He appeared in court Monday, charged with three counts each of aggravated murder and kidnapping.
Madison, a registered sex offender, has indicated to police that he may have been influenced by Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell, who is on death row for killing 11 women ages 24 to 52 at his home in the city.
Sowell, a convicted sex offender, was captured in 2009. In court papers, prosecutors described him as "the worst offender in the history of Cuyahoga County and arguably the State of Ohio."
Following his arrest, Madison suggested to police that there may be more victims, according to Norton. Investigators and volunteers spent Sunday combing through the East Cleveland neighborhood in search of more bodies but found nothing.
??We are pursuing every lead. The goal is to leave no stone unturned,? Norton said Tuesday. ?We hope and pray that we do not find anything else.?

Cleanup and assessment continue Tuesday at the torando-damaged O'Brien Athletic Center at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike.
Ursuline College in Pepper Pike has begun restoration efforts after a tornado touched down on campus early Saturday morning.
At 3:30 a.m. Saturday, an EF1 tornado with winds of 110 mph came through the woods, hit the athletic building, and went over a lake on the campus.
It is estimated that debris spread for two miles.
The O'Brien Athletic Center has severe damage, with one wall collapsed and part of the roof destroyed.
In total, four buildings were affected by the storm. The Dauby Science Center and the Besse Library have roof and water damage.
The Mullen Administration Building only had minor roof damage.
"I am most grateful to God that nobody was hurt and there were no injuries on campus," Sister Diana Stano, college president, said at a news conference Tuesday morning. "It was probably the least occupied time on this campus ever in its history."
Eight people were on campus when the tornado hit.
"We just finished summer camps for students, we had students living in residence halls ... (and) we had students staying overnight in the gym the Thursday before this happened," Stano said.
Living areas on campus had only minor damage, with only some broken windows and power outages. Continued...
"What we haven't yet determined is the extent of the damage on the O'Brien Athletic Center because (engineers) don't know whether the (building) is structurally sound," Stano said.
Ursuline was just accepted as an active NCAA Division II school earlier this month.
"We will have an operating athletic department this year," she said. "Everything will be going on as scheduled, and we will continue ... (to make sure) athletics is still occurring this school year."
College officials are unsure of what insurance will cover, but they are sure it won't cover everything, such as the trees that were uprooted by the storm, so they have started an Ursuline Rebuilding Fund that the community can donate to.
Stano said there has been outstanding community support, with police departments, fire departments, restoration crews, and others coming to aid as early as 4 a.m. the morning the tornado hit.
People from all over the state, nation, and other countries have shown their support for the Ursuline College community, she said.
"We are very grateful for the outpouring of well wishes, prayers, and offerings of support," Stano said.
Summer classes have been moved to safe locations, but summer camps at Ursuline have been cancelled.
"Our No. 1 concern is safety, to make sure our campus is safe," Stano said.
Tree removal, restoration and rebuilding will continue through the rest of the summer. Continued...
"We continue to be very strong," she said. "This is a community of faith, I believe that we will continue and God will continue to bless and reward us for all good that we do."

CHICAGO (AP) ? Chicago's City Council gave final approval Wednesday to a $500 million renovation of historic Wrigley Field that includes its first massive Jumbotron, improved facilities for the players in the bowels of the 99-year-old ballpark and a hotel across the street.
Under the plan, the Chicago Cubs would erect a 5,700-square-foot electronic Jumbotron in left field above the ivy-covered outfield walls that is roughly three times as large as the iconic manual scoreboard in center field, as well as another large advertising sign in right field.
The Cubs, which waited decades to install lights at Wrigley, have been pushing for renovations since the Ricketts family bought the team in 2009. After an effort to get public help for the project failed, the Cubs said the team would fund the entire renovation ? but it needed the signs and the advertising revenue they would generate to help pay for it.
The City Council's voice vote in favor of the plan came a day after the council's zoning committee signed off on the deal with the blessing of the alderman whose ward includes the ballpark. Alderman Tom Tunney's support was considered crucial to the project that Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants approved. Tunney initially said the signs would harm the quality of life in the neighborhood around Wrigley, but he signed off on the deal after winning concessions from the Cubs. Among them was an agreement not to erect any outfield signs in addition to the Jumbotron and right field sign and to indefinitely postpone a proposed bridge over the adjoining Clark Street.
Still looming is whether the Jumbotron and right field sign will disrupt the views of the rooftops that surround two sides of the ballpark. The owners of the rooftops, who have a contract with the Cubs to share a chunk of their revenue with the team, have said repeatedly that they might file suit if the Cubs put up anything that cuts into their views.
The signs have easily been the most contentious part of the project because erecting them could trigger lawsuits from the rooftop owners and change the look of the ballpark that has become beloved as a link to baseball's history.
During public hearings, many fans told city officials that it was time for the ballpark to change. They said if the team was to continue to attract fans, particularly younger ones, it had to include the Jumbotron and other amenities that are common in every other Major League stadium. The back-and-forth became so heated that at one point, the team's chairman, Tom Ricketts, floated the idea of moving the team to another location where it could get the amenities it needs to compete with other teams.

A man works in a container where the MiG-21 jets were found aboard the North Korean vessel.
By Lomi Kriel, Reuters
COLON, Panama -- Panamanian investigators unloading the cargo of a seized North Korean ship that carried arms from Cuba have found the two MiG-21 fighter jets the Cuban government had said were on board, the government said Sunday.
Alongside the two supersonic planes, originally produced by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s, officials found two missile radar systems on board the Chong Chon Gang, President Ricardo Martinelli told reporters in the Atlantic port of Colon.
The discovery, which included cables and electrical equipment, was made inside containers on the ship Panama had feared might contain explosive material. None was found.
After stopping the vessel bound for North Korea last week, Panama revealed it had found weapons in the cargo hold late on Monday. In response, Cuba said the shipment contained a range of "obsolete" arms being sent to North Korea for repair.
Panama has asked the U.N. Security Council to investigate the ship and its contents amid suspicion that the vessel is in breach of a wide-ranging arms embargo on North Korea for its nuclear and ballistic missile program.
"One can't take undeclared weapons through the Panama Canal below other cargo," Martinelli said, adding that he had not spoken personally to any Cuban officials since they first asked for the ship to be released last Saturday.
Javier Caraballo, Panama's top anti-drugs prosecutor, said the planes gave off a strong odor of gasoline, indicating that they had likely been used recently. So far, Panama has not found anything not on the Cubans' list of ordnance, he added.
A ship stocked with weapons and missiles was intercepted near the Panama Canal traveling from Cuba to North Korea.
The U.N. team is expected to arrive in early August once Panama has finished unloading the 510-foot ship.
The weapons were hidden under thousands of sacks of sugar on the freighter. Before the arms were discovered, Cuba told Panama the cargo was a donation of sugar for the people of North Korea.
The isolated Asian nation has asked Panama to release the ship and its 35 member crew, who were arrested and charged with attempting to smuggle undeclared weapons through the canal.
Panama has so far dismissed North Korea's requests.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Moviegoers were ready for a fright this weekend, sending "The Conjuring" into first place at the box office, while "R.I.P.D." became the summer's latest big-budget action film to bite the dust.
"The Conjuring," a haunted-house thriller from Warner Bros., debuted with $41.5 million in North American ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Starring Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston, "The Conjuring" unseated two-week box-office champ "Despicable Me 2," which dropped to second place with $25 million.
"The Conjuring" was among four new releases tempting moviegoers this weekend. The newest animated offering, Fox's "Turbo," opened with $21.5 million, good for third place. Fox's head of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson, characterized the opening as "a very promising start," noting that the film won't open in Europe until the fall.
But Universal's big-budget crime caper "R.I.P.D." opened with a disappointing $12.76 million. The film reportedly cost more than $130 million to make, compared to only about $19.5 million for "The Conjuring."
Starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, "R.I.P.D" joins the year's other mega-budget summer flops, including "Pacific Rim," ''White House Down," ''After Earth" and "The Lone Ranger."
Overall box office totals are up, though, said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
"Despite the fact there have been some high-profile, high-budget flops, the summer to date is up 12 percent from last year," he said. "For mid-July, to have a modestly budgeted horror film top the weekend tells you how important it is for audiences to have options."
The Adam Sandler-produced Sony comedy "Grown Ups 2," starring Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Salma Hayek, held onto fourth place in its second week of release, earning $20 million.
Summit Entertainment's "Red 2," which stars Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren as retired CIA operatives, debuted in fifth with $18.5 million.
"The Conjuring" was originally set for release in the winter, but audience tests proved so positive that the studio moved the film to the heat of summer movie season.
"It was really a bold choice, no question about it," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. executive vice president of theatrical distribution. "With three other movies against us this week with high price tags and high expectations associated with them, this result is even more impressive."
Still, there was no chance for this weekend's movies to match box-office totals for the same weekend last summer, when "The Dark Knight Rises" opened with $161 million domestically.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas agreed to resume peace talks with Israel only after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry gave him a letter guaranteeing that the basis of the negotiations will be Israel's pre-1967 borders, two senior Palestinian officials said Saturday.
A Western official, however, later denied that the '67 lines would be the basis of negotiations.
The Palestinian officials, both of whom are close to the Palestinian leader and privy to internal discussions, said the U.S. letter also stipulated that both sides are to refrain from taking any steps that would jeopardize the outcome of the talks. Israel is not to issue new tenders for Jewish settlements in the West Bank, while the Palestinians are not to pursue diplomatic action against Israel at any international organizations, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media.
"The talks with Kerry were about to collapse, and the letter came as a lifeline in the last-minute bargaining," one of the Palestinian officials said.
U.S. officials have said in the past that Kerry would reiterate standing American positions on the goals for renewed talks, including that a Palestinian state should be negotiated on the basis of Israel's borders before the 1967 Mideast war, when Israel captured the Gaza Strip, West Bank and east Jerusalem.
There was no immediate comment from the State Department, though a Western official denied the Palestinian officials' claim about the '67 borders.
"There are no terms of reference or any other agreements that the '67 lines will be the basis for negotiations," the official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the official had no authorization to speak to the media.
After a round of intense shuttle diplomacy, Kerry announced on Friday that Israel and the Palestinians had agreed on a basis for returning to the peace process, which broke down five years ago. The two sides are to meet ? likely in the coming week ? to work out final details on actually resuming their negotiations on the toughest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Kerry would not give details on the agreement on the negotiations' framework. "The best way to give these negotiations a chance is to keep them private." he said. "We know that the challenges require some very tough choices in the days ahead. Today, however, I am hopeful."
The Palestinians long refused to return to the negotiating table unless Israel agreed to several preconditions, including that the talks be based on Israel's pre-1967 borders. Israel frequently called for talks to resume without preconditions, insisting that all core issues should be resolved through dialogue.
Speculation has been rife for weeks that the sides would find a way to sidestep Israel's reluctance to offer assurances of the 1967 lines as the framework for talks by having the guarantee provided by the United States.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces sharp opposition from within his majority coalition to such a move. One key ally, Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, has threatened to pull his Jewish Home Party out of the government altogether if the prime minister agrees to the border conditions.
The basis of the negotiations themselves ? not the core issues at the heart of the conflict ? has been a major impediment to resuming talks. On Thursday evening, the Palestinian leadership balked at dropping a main condition: They demanded a guarantee that negotiations on borders between a Palestinian state and Israel would be based on the cease-fire line that held from 1949 until the 1967 war.
Kerry's announcement late Friday suggested that the question had been resolved, although the top U.S. diplomat offered no details.
Netanyahu issued a statement Saturday evening welcoming Kerry's announcement and thanking him for his efforts, saying he "views the resumption of the political process at this time a vital strategic interest."
Earlier Saturday, Israel's intelligence and strategic affairs minister offered a few details on the framework. He confirmed that Israel would release some Palestinian prisoners, but said it will not meet other long-standing Palestinian demands before negotiations resume, such as a settlement freeze or defining the 1967 borders as the basis for talks.
Yuval Steinitz told Israel Radio that prisoners Israel has agreed to release include some who "have been sitting in jail for dozens of years," He did not say how many would be freed, adding only that they would be released in phases.
The fate of the prisoners is extremely sensitive in Palestinian society. After decades of fighting Israel, many families have had a member imprisoned and the release of prisoners has been a longstanding demand. The Palestinians are held on a range of charges, from rock throwing to deadly assaults like shooting attacks or bombings targeting Israeli soldiers and civilians. The Palestinians mostly view the prisoners as heroes while Israelis tend to see them as terrorists.
In a sign of the opposition Netanyahu faces even within his own government, deputy defense minister Danny Danon issued a statement condemning the prisoner release, saying "these murderers must not be released as an 'act of good will' or as a prize for returning to the negotiating table."
Steinitz said it a nine-month timetable was agreed to for the talks to prevent them from collapsing along the way. He also said the Palestinians agreed to refrain from taking action against Israel at the United Nations while the talks are taking place ? echoing the statement from the Palestinian officials.
Israel's chief negotiator with the Palestinians, Tzipi Livni, welcomed the revival of the peace process. She said it was difficult to restart talks after years of mistrust between the sides, but that she is "hopeful" about them.
"This is a very heavy responsibility," Livni told Israel's Channel 2 TV of the talks. "All the issues will be on the table."
Final status negotiations aim to reach a deal on the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including Jerusalem, borders, the fate of Palestinian refugees and security arrangements. Talks ground to a halt five years ago, and previous efforts to revive them have stalled, particularly over Palestinian demands that Israel announce a freeze in construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which they claim as part of a future state along with Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.
In Gaza, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said his group rejects Kerry's announcement, saying it does not recognize Abbas' "legitimacy to negotiate" on their behalf. The militant Hamas group rules Gaza, and has been at odds with Abbas since taking over the seaside strip in 2007.

Associated PressAs a male I do find it a bit awkward when a woman is breastfeeding her child in public ? not worthy of reprimand?but awkward. So how do you make it more awkward? You address the mom and tell her that she and her child are in violation of the ?no food or drink? policy. Awkward!
That is exactly what happened at a pool in England. A mother had her 9 month old child with her in the hot tub (so it looks like she was making bad decisions anyways) and the baby got fussy (probably from the scalding water) and decided that breastfeeding the kid while still in the hot tub was the best option to get him to stop crying.
The lifeguard on duty saw this and told her that she had to stop ? not because she had a small child in the pool but because they have a strict no food or drink policy at the pool! The woman got angry and said it was her right and the lifeguard eventually dropped it. The pool?s general manager later released a statement saying they do support a woman?s right to breastfeed in public, just not while they?re in the pool or the hot tub.
Oh boy ? what do you think?

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Police say a woman who died while riding a 14-story roller coaster at Six Flags amusement park in North Texas apparently fell from the ride.
Arlington Police Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that there appears to have been no foul play in Friday's death at the Six Flags Over Texas park in Arlington.
Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster ? dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world. She did not give specifics of what happened, saying park authorities were committed to helping authorities determine the cause of the "tragic accident."
The woman was not immediately identified by authorities.
Police say the Texas Department of Insurance, which approves amusement rides, is involved in investigating the accident.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Attorneys suing the NCAA over its handling of head injuries asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit nationwide to include thousands of plaintiffs in a case they contend could change college sports forever.
The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed two years ago on behalf of several former athletes, including former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington. His attorney, Joseph Siprut, said he doesn't want to see the demise of college contact sports, including football, but safety is paramount.
"If changes aren't made, the sport is going to slowly die," he said. If they can't be reassured football is safe, parents will stop their kids from playing "and when the talent well dries up, that's how the sport dies."
The NCAA late Friday did immediately have a comment.
Concussions have become a major issue in sports in recent years. The NFL, NHL and college football, among others, have implemented stricter rules on hits to the head and player safety. But the NFL is mired in a lawsuit involving more than 4,000 former players seeking millions of dollars for problems they blame on head injuries during their careers.
The NCAA could wind up in a similar situation.
Attached to the class-action request is a report for the plaintiffs by a leading authority on concussions, Robert Cantu, who cites an internal NCAA survey from 2010. He said the NCAA found that nearly half of the college trainers who responded indicated they put athletes showing signs of a concussion back in the same game.
"It is well settled in the scientific community that an athlete must never be returned to play on the same day after a concussion diagnosis," said Cantu, who is medical director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The plaintiffs say the NCAA was lax in establishing a clear policy about dealing with concussions, leaving key decisions to individual schools or leagues.
"That is tantamount to doing nothing or even worse," said Siprut. "It creates the misperception that they have taken adequate measures when they haven't."
Arrington contends he suffered "numerous and repeated concussions" at Eastern Illinois, which is perhaps best known as the alma mater of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Saints coach Sean Payton. Arrington is seeking unspecified monetary damages and changes in policy including the establishment of a long-term medical monitoring program for injured athletes and new concussion guidelines for schools and coaches.
The lawsuit accuses the NCAA of failing student-athletes and "choosing instead to sacrifice them on an altar of money and profits" by neglecting to adopt stricter standards. Responding to Arrington's lawsuit in 2011, the NCAA said it found "gross misstatements" and said the governing body has been "concerned about the safety of all of its student-athletes, including those playing football, throughout its history."
The NCAA has taken recent steps to beef up awareness of how to treat possible head injuries, from legislation and outreach efforts to new rules on the playing field. Earlier Friday, the NCAA said it was awarding a $399,999 grant to fund a study into the long-term effects of head injuries in college sports.
Last fall, the NCAA said the rate of football-related concussions has remained steady over an eight-year period ? with 2.5 concussions reported for every 1,000 game-related exposures in 2011. The NCAA says there are estimates that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreation-related activities every year.
The concussions lawsuit is just one of several legal headaches for the NCAA. On Thursday, six current college football players were added as plaintiffs to a high-profile antitrust lawsuit that claims the NCAA owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used without compensation. The federal judge in that case is still mulling whether to turn the lawsuit into a class action.

There are still some openings for golfers who want to participate in the Sixth Annual Jordyn Cook Epilepsy Fund Golf Tournament, which will take place Monday, July 22, at the Plymouth Country Club, 221 Warren Avenue.
Proceeds from the tournament are expected to help the Fund reach its objective of raising a total of $350,000 to fund Massachusetts General Hospital educational website, ?Growing Up With Epilepsy? (www.massgeneral.org/childhoodEpilepsy).
The site is an ongoing resource that includes an introduction to epilepsy, and information about the brain and seizure types; there is valuable information for families of epilepsy patients on diagnosis, causes and treatment. There is additionally a section dedicated to ?the whole child,? which addresses learning, behavior, family life, activities and more.
To date, the Fund has contributed $336,000 to this effort; and, according to Peter A. Cook, Jr., President of the Jordyn Cook Epilepsy Fund, they expect to easily reach their goal with this tournament.
Jordyn Cook is a 16-year old young lady who lives with epilepsy. She is a student at the May School in Brockton, and gets to spend weekends with her family in Kingston. She and her father, Peter A. Cook, Jr. and their family have said how grateful they are for the generosity of everyone over the years.
Jordyn?s grandfather, Peter Cook Sr. of Marshfield, recounted an amazing act of generosity at last year?s tournament that he said moved him deeply. Last year, retired railroad conductor Joseph Motte of East Bridgewater won the grand raffle prize of $25,000, but turned the entire amount back to the Fund.
Peter Cook Sr. said that their family was so moved by the generosity of this individual that they plan to recognize him at this year?s tournament. ?Joe?s story speaks to the selflessness of people who want to help someone in need,? he said, adding, ?We were all so touched by his generosity, and of course the generosity of everyone who has helped over these last six years.?
Seizures from epilepsy result in up to 45,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, more than the number from breast cancer. Epilepsy affects more people than Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson?s disease, Muscular Dystrophy and blindness combined.
Because the Fund is so close to achieving its goal, the tournament directors have reduced the prices for participation this year, as a ?thank you? to all who have helped in the past. The fee for individual golf is $75, or $300 per foursome. The entry fee includes lunch, golf with cart and a sit-down dinner. Non-golfers who are interested in dinner only can do so at $35 per person.
The format of the tournament is a scramble. Contests will include ?Closest to the Pin,? ?Longest Driver? and a $25,000 putting contest.
There are also a few sponsorship opportunities remaining. For additional information, please call the Jordan Cook Epilepsy Fund (JCEF) at 781-837-9222 or visit www.jordyncookepilepsyfund.org. The Fund?s offices are located at 475 School Street, Suite 5, Marshfield, MA 02050.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Asian stock markets were mostly down Friday as fund managers shift money from Asia to the U.S. amid concerns that growth is slowing in China and Japan's economic reforms may be losing steam.
Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 1 percent at 14,647.41 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.5 percent to 4,969.30.
Benchmarks in Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand and Taiwan were also lower while Hong Kong's Hang Seng added just 0.1 percent to 21,368.62. Seoul's Kospi wavered between gains and losses.
China earlier this week reported its second straight quarter of slower growth and authorities appear determined to stick to a path of shifting the economy away from reliance on investment and exports, which could dent economic activity in the near term.
In Japan, the initial euphoria over the "Abenomics" stimulus policies of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has faded and doubts have emerged abour whether deeper reforms will be carried out.
"Although the U.S. market is at record high, in Asia, people are still worried about two things: one, the slowdown in China, and then number two, the situation in Japan," said Francis Lun of GE Oriental Financial Group. He said there was concern "Abenomics may be running out of steam."
Lun said because the U.S. markets are doing well, a lot of fund managers have been shifting money from Asia to America.
"You have an exodus of funds that began in the second half of May and the exodus is still continuing," he said.
U.S. stocks rose to record levels Thursday on earnings gains at major U.S. companies and encouraging economic news.
Claims for unemployment benefits fell and manufacturing surged in the mid-Atlantic region. Higher earnings from companies including UnitedHealth Group and Morgan Stanley also helped though reports from Microsoft and Google after the close of trading were less impressive.
The S&P 500 closed up 0.5 percent at 1,689.37 and the Dow rose 0.5 percent to 15,548.54.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of British shares rose 1 percent Thursday to close at 6,634.36 while the CAC-40 in France gained 1.4 percent to 3,927.79. Germany's DAX rose 1 percent to 8,337.09
Benchmark crude for August delivery was up 14 cents at $108.18 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract jumped $1.56 to close at $108.04 on Thursday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3137 from $1.3106 late Thursday. The dollar fell to 99.94 yen from 100.48 yen.

According to a source of Dutch site Tweakers.net, which has been spot on with a previous Dell leak, a new laptop known as the M3800 is set to join Dell's Precision range of fun-hating workstations. An Intel Core i7-4702MQ (Haswell) processor will reportedly power the M3800, with an 2GB NVIDIA Quadro K1100M card taking care of graphics. It's expected to come with up to 16GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive or 512MB SSD, and two options for the 15.6-inch screen: a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution or standard 1080p panel. The workstation is said to measure 18mm (around 0.7 inches) at its thickest point, and tip the scales at 2kg (70.5 ounces). Integrated docking found on other Precision models is apparently not in the M3800's feature set; it's also missing an Ethernet port, so hard-lines will need to be connected via a USB intermediate. Tweakers.net lists an expected price range of $1,699 to $1,999, but now comes the part where we wait for the M3800 to go official and see how correct all this leaked info is.
