Texas Firearms Instructor Will Not Train Socialist Liberals, Obama Supporters or Muslims (ContributorNetwork)

Crockett Keller, the owner of Keller's Riverside Store near Mason, Texas, offers firearms training for people wishing to qualify for a concealed carry permit. However, no "socialist liberals," Obama supporters or Muslims need apply.

What is Keller doing in regards to the kind of cliental he desires?

Keller is running radio ads that, in effect, state no liberals, Obama supporters or Muslims need apply to his firearms training course. He suggests "socialist liberals" and Obama supporters lack the judgment to be allowed to operate a firearm. He offers no reason for not wanting to teach Muslims how to shoot.

Can Keller legally do this?

Likely not, at least in regard to Muslims or Arabs. Political affiliation may be another matter, though how Keller intends to verify that is unknown. He is operating as a firearms instructor under a certification by Texas. Texas requires such instructors to comply with all applicable laws. That means Keller cannot discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion. There is an investigation of Keller by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Keller is in jeopardy of losing his certification as a firearms instructor for the concealed carry program.

How does the Texas concealed carry law work?

Any Texan can apply for a permit to carry a concealed firearm if they meet certain criteria. The applicant must pay a $140 fee and pass a background check. They must be 21 years old or older (18 or older if a member of the armed forces). One has to have a clean criminal record, not be under a protective order, must not be chemically dependent and must not be of "unsound mind." One must not be in arrears for paying fines, child support, fees, student loans, etc. And one must pass a certified firearms course as taught by Keller.

What has been the fallout of Keller's radio ad?

Keller claims he is getting "hundreds" of calls in support of his stance. He is getting a lot of free publicity for his store. Even if he should lose his certification as a firearms instructor, he stands a pretty good chance of coming out ahead, at least financially, because of increased business.
