Gale Anne Hurd Adapting 'Alien Hunter' at Syfy (Exclusive)

Gale Anne Hurd is going on the hunt for aliens with Syfy.

The Walking Dead executive producer is teaming with the NBCUniversal-owned cable network and writer Natalie Chaldez to develop Hunters, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on Whitley Strieber's best-selling novel Alien Hunter, the 90-minute drama, which is in development, follows a Pennsylvania detective-turned-suspect Flynn Carroll who, after his wife mysteriously goes missing, is determined to prove his innocence and find her. His search leads to evidence that dangerous alien cells are living among us, and the U.S. government has a secret organization in place to thwart their terrorist efforts.

Heroes and V alum Chaidez will pen the script and executive produce alongside Hurd via the prolific producer's Universal Cable Productions-based Valhalla Entertainment banner.

"It's based on Whitley Strieber, who's most well-known for Communion. He's a person incredibly well spoken, incredibly bright and incredibly knowledgeable. He had an encounter, and it changed his life -- in good ways and in not so good ways," Hurd told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent interview. "It's a work of fiction. Many of the books he has written have been nonfiction, and this is fiction. It's based on his book Alien Hunter, and it's about a police officer whose wife goes missing. And in his search to find out the truth of her abduction, he finds something much more dangerous that could potentially affect the fate of the planet."

The National Police Service Amendment Bill proposes to make the Inspector General responsible for all matters touching on the command, deployment and discipline of the Service. CFM.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 4- Members of the civil society organisations are now calling on the government to investigate cases of threats and intimidation among their leaders.

Through the National Civil Society Congress leader Moris Odhiambo, they claim for the last one month most of them have been receiving numerous threatening and intimidating text messages.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Odhiambo urged the police to take the matter seriously because all the cases have been reported to them.

?SMS threats have come to a number of us including myself and I reported to Kileleshwa police station on Friday .We don?t think it is helping to take that route. We think it is important for our leadership to give everyone a voice and assuring protection,? Odhiambo told journalists.

The activists said they are worried the threats may be a way of trying to silence them from highlighting key issues affecting Kenyans.

?Targeting civil society organisations and individuals will not sort out the problems we have in this country. In fact, that will only compound the problem. Let everyone air out issues that are affecting this country freely,? he said.

One of the activists Boaz Waruku said he is worried since receiving the threatening message.

?On the August 1, 2013 at 15:04 hours, I received a text message written; ?if you think you are so clever ensure you don?t cross the line once and forever. Your days are numbered and I will ensure you see what you have never seen before. You will realy regret,? he said ?Do you expect somebody to rest nicely at home after that text.?

They have now called on the Ministry of interior and coordination of national government to thoroughly investigate the source of the messages.

Meanwhile, the lobby groups want parliament to vote down the proposed amendments to the National Police Service and the National Police service Commission Acts.

They are specifically opposed to making the office of the Inspector General of Police more powerful than that of the National Police Service Commission that is led by Johnstone Kavuludi.

Florence Kanyua, an official in the civil society group, said the move will undermine the intended purpose of the National Police service Commission of ensuring transparency and accountability in the actions of the police hence compromise on security.

?With the reforms that Kenyans want to see in the police force, I don?t think giving the Inspector General powers will help. The amendments they want to do are not acceptable to us,? she protested.

Nissan's Infiniti aims for top-tier luxury status

Johan De Nysschen (L), president of Infiniti Motor Motor Company, and Ben Poore, president of Infiniti Americas, pose after announcing the new Q50 at the New York Auto Show in March.

With the launch of its new Q50 sedan, Infiniti is steering a new course as it tries to navigate out of the second-tier of luxury brands and take on better-known high-line marques like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus.

The Q50 replaces the old Infiniti G series and initiates an all-new alphanumeric naming strategy. It also introduces the world?s first steer-by-wire technology, among a variety of other high-tech features being added to the new sedan.

Whether potential buyers take to the new Direct Adaptive Steering system remains to be seen, and analysts warn that Infiniti risks serious confusion as it rebrands existing models to conform to the new nomenclature ? something that has caused serious problems for Honda?s Acura and Ford?s Lincoln when they also abandoned more familiar model names.

?We know we?ll face challenges in the short-term but there are tremendous opportunities in the long-term,? said Robb Simmons, Infiniti?s senior marketing manager, during a media preview of the new Q50 line.

Nissan?s luxury division made its debut nearly a quarter-century ago, debuting almost simultaneously with Toyota?s Lexus brand. But Infiniti never quite got the traction of its Japanese rival, as analysts blamed product shortfalls and a curious ad campaign that focused on rocks and trees rather than the maker?s new vehicles.

Infiniti has gained some momentum, in recent years, with the entry-luxury G series, now its best-selling model line. But while volumes jumped 22 percent in 2012, to 119,877, that was barely half the U.S. total of luxury segment leaders. And Infiniti had virtually no presence outside the U.S. market.

Parent Nissan hopes to change that going forward. It recently reorganized Infiniti as a standalone entity, giving the luxury brand its own design and engineering operations as well as a new headquarters in Hong Kong ? where the brand will have a clear view of China. China is expected to become the world?s largest luxury market by decade?s end, according to various forecasts.

The maker also got a new boss, South African-born Johan de Nysschen, who won kudos during his time as head of the fast-growing U.S. subsidiary of Audi. ?My goal is to unlock the potential of this brand,? he told The Detroit Bureau during an interview, even if that means he has to ?challenge? the way Infiniti has traditionally done business.

Perhaps the biggest challenge comes from the decision to change the name of Infiniti?s current and future products. Passenger cars will be designated by a ?Q,? crossovers and light trucks getting a ?QX.?

Read more:?Toyota Earnings Nearly Double, Buoyed By Weak Yen, Even as Sales Slip?

The new Q50 reaching showrooms in August will be the first all-new model to take advantage of that shift. The sedan is slightly lower, longer and wider than the old G sedan, with a more distinctive grille, sculpted silhouette and the distinctive ?crescent? rear pillar first seen on the Infiniti JX ? which will be renamed the QX60 which isn?t to be confused with the old QX56 that becomes the QX80.

?There is a risk that the alphanumeric designation becomes a jumble in the minds of consumers,? analyst Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting, warns, pointing to the sales stumbles both Acura and Lincoln experienced when they completely revised their own model nomenclatures.

Read more: Jaguar to Unveil 1st-Ever SUV

On the other hand, Phillippi says Acura could get through the challenge with new products that are solid and appealing. The real challenge will be finding a way to ?truly differentiate themselves from the rest of the luxury pack. They?ve never quite managed to catch fire and generate a substantial amount of enthusiasm for the brand.?

That?s where the Q50 comes in. The new model is part of the broader Nissan class-above strategy which aims to deliver vehicles that seem a bit more lavish and well-equipped than direct competitors ? here including such products as the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. Introducing some cutting-edge technology is also part of the strategy.

Read more: Which Brands Will Cost You Most to Keep Fuel in the Tank??

The Q50?s optional Direct Adaptive Steering system makes it the world?s first production car equipped with steer-by-wire which replaces traditional mechanical linkage (though there?s a mechanical backup of power should fail). The system precisely reads driver inputs and, so Infiniti claims, can steer the wheels more quickly than a traditional system. In turn, electronic sensors pass road feel back to the driver ? though the three controllers have been designed to tune out unwanted harsh road inputs.

The steer-by-wire system has a lot of potential advantages and also permits the new Q50 to offer an optional lane-holding system that comes a step short of hands-free driving, a camera mounted at the top of the windshield looking for lane markers much like human eyes.

Infiniti officials promise the Q50 will be just one in a rapidly expanding line-up of products to debut over the next few years including one or more so-called ?halo? models designed to focus attention on the brand. The Nissan subsidiary also will add a range of new powertrains, such as the hybrid system in the Q50 that is meant to balance performance and fuel economy.

It?s an ambitious goal with potential pitfalls. Indeed, Infiniti officials confirmed last month they will indefinitely delay a luxury battery-electric vehicle based on the mainstream Nissan Leaf?s technology.

For his part, marketing chief Simmons says he?s confident Infiniti can roll out the product. The challenge will be ?to make consumers aware of us.? Compounding that challenge is Infiniti?s plan to become a truly global player.

Infiniti has spent more than two decades climbing into the middle of the pack. Challenging the established luxury leaders won?t come quick, both Simmons and de Nysschen agreeing they will need to push hard but maintain their patience. ?

US closes embassies, issues global travel alert over Al Qaeda threat

The State Department ordered a precautionary closing on Sunday of 21 US embassies and consulates, mainly in the Middle East, without citing a specific threat. But its global travel alert says Al Qaeda may attack 'between now and the end of August.'

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / August 2, 2013

With the anniversary of the attack approaching, US embassies and consulates, mainly in the Middle East, that would normally be open this Sunday will be closed, the US State Department said Thursday.

The State Department isn?t saying anything about specific threats. But a global travel alert the State Department issued Friday makes the origin of the threat clear: ?Current information suggests that Al Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond,? the alert states. Al Qaeda and its affiliates ?may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,? it adds.

Sources with access to intelligence, including certain members of Congress, say the threat was picked up in more than the usual amount of communications, or ?chatter,? about possible attacks against US interests overseas.

And, especially, with the anniversary of the deadly firebombing of an unprepared US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, approaching, it?s clear the potential danger is enough to prompt extraordinary measures.

The State Department on Friday issued a list of 21 embassies and consulates, mostly in the Middle East, that are instructed to close Sunday. On Thursday, deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said the order affects ?all US embassies and consulates that would have normally been open on Sunday.? The weekend in Muslim countries is typically Friday and Saturday, with Sunday beginning the work week.

Among the countries where US diplomatic missions will close are Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Facilities in some countries may remain closed past Sunday, Ms. Harf said.

Friday?s travel alert does not single out any particular countries where Americans should avoid travel, but it does refer to a ?continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula.?

Disease Management Can Vaccination Prevent Cervical Cancer?

'); $('').appendTo('#' + img_div); $(this).appendTo('#' + img_div); } }); } catch (error) { Console.log(error.message); } });

?

Disease Management: Can Vaccination Prevent Cervical Cancer Completely?

Cervical cancer mostly occurs in women who are in their 30s or 40s. This cancer is steadily growing in India and so it is important to create an awareness to prevent cervical cancer. Dr J.B. Sharma, Senior Consultant of Medical Oncology from Delhi's Action Cancer Hospital says that ?vaccination can prevent one from getting this deadly disease.?

What is Cervical Cancer?

A cervical tumour starts from one abnormal cell. The exact reason why a cell becomes cancerous and multiplies ?out of control? is still unclear. The initial ?pre-cancerous? abnormality of cervical cells is usually caused by a prior infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Smoking, poor immune system and oral contraceptive pills can cause cervical cancer.

Cervical Cancer Symptoms:

Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom of cervix cancer. It is important that you promptly report any abnormal vaginal bleeding (bleeding in between periods, heavy periods, bleeding after intercourse) or vaginal discharge to a doctor.

There are two main types of cervical cancer:

?

  • Squamous cell cervical cancer is the most common. This develops when a skin-like cell (a squamous cell) that covers the cervix, becomes cancerous.
  • Adenocarcinoma cervical cancer is less common. This develops when a glandular cell (a cell that makes mucus) within the cervical canal, becomes cancerous.

In regards to the vaccination and the effectiveness of preventing cervical cancer, Dr J.B. Sharma explains, ?In many cases, almost all cervical cancer is caused by a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus) that is spread through skin-to-skin contact and sex. Vaccines that prevent people from getting infected with HPV are now available. These vaccines are available for both men and women and works best if a person receives it before he or she begins engaging in sexual activity. These available vaccines target only a few strains of virus, which gives protection upto 90-95 percent but not 100 percent. For example there are two vaccines available in the market:

Gardasil: a quadrivalent HPV vaccine, which targets HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

Cervarix:
a bivalent vaccine that targets HPV types 16 and 18.

Democratic governors nervous about health plan

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association in Milwaukee Saturday.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

Web Design Brookfield, WI - Wordpress Explained | Waukesha Web ...

If you have gone through our website a bit, you?ve probably noticed that we talk about WordPress a lot! It?s hard to fully explain the benefits of WordPress without showing someone first hand how amazing it really is, but we?ll do our best to explain it here in more detail to see if it?s a good fit for you.

WprdPress Explained by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress Explained: by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress and content management systems (CMS) like it are truely the future of web design. We personally use WordPress for our own site and suggest it to every Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Brookfield, WI Web Design client that walks through our door. Providing businesses with a way to update and manage their website is by far the most valuable marketing tool that money can buy these days.

What is a content management sysem (CMS)?

Content managament systems provide a way to easily manage text, images, and pages on a website at their core, yet work very similarly to smart phones in regards to apps, which I?ll explain later. Somewhere in between, companies like Lowcows are able to create website designs and tools that seamlessly integrate into WordPress allowing us to build sites with incredible functionality at a fraction of what it would have cost just five years ago.

The design

WordPress uses ?Themes? for the website?s actual design. There are thousands of free and premium themes out there that look great to begin with, and can also be customized to more closely fit a company?s brand. The other option is to custom design a theme specifically for a company. It?s hard to use the word ?theme? without it sounding like a generic template site, but they couldn?t be any more different. WordPress is what makes these websites so powerful and the design is a reflection of who we are as businesses. Everything about a WordPress Theme is designed to be modified to reflect the individual or business.

Plugins

Plugins for WordPress are very similar to apps for a smart phone. Different plugins can be installed on a WordPress site to perform various tasks. Example?s of plugins are photo galleries, social sharing buttons, email list signup forms, interactive maps, image sliders, polls and calendars just to begin with. There are literally thousands of plucins available for free. There are also thousands of great paid plugins as well that cost pennies on the dollar compared to hand coding the same feature. Having tools like these that are ready to be installed on a website saves business owners thousands compared to just five years ago. What we can complete in weeks these days would have taken us 6 months not that long ago. It?s truly a win, win for everyone!

Functionality

WordPress makes it very easy to manage your websites content. Once we train you to work with WordPress, it?s about as difficult as sending an email to update your pages. Just a few minutes a day will allow you to communicate with your clients like never before. We often preach to our clients that they need to give people a reason to come back to their website. We blog about different resources available to businesses online for the same reason a restaurant would post their specials, or a shoe store would advertise a sale. People need a reason to come back to a website, and WordPress makes it a practical to do so without costing a lot of time or money.

Compared to large corporate websites, we?re able to duplicate 95% of what you see on those sites at a fraction of the cost, and without needing special software or a full time IT person. WordPress currently has just shy of 70 million people using their CMS to manage their website. It?s literally changing the Internet right before our eyes.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about WordPress. If you?re looking for web design in Brookfield, WI, Milwaukee, or? Waukesha, please feel free to give us a call. We?d love to give you a personal, no pressure tour of WordPress!

Where does Rajon Rondo rank among NBA point guards?

Here's one of those pointless topics that we can debate all day and never find a real answer to. Enjoy!

ESPN ran some numbers and ranked the top 10 point guards for this coming year. Due to his injury, there wasn't enough data to rank Rajon Rondo, but apparently even if he did qualify, his ranking wouldn't have made many of us happy.

NBA - Projecting the top 10 point guards by WARP for 2013-14 - ESPN

Rajon Rondo's existing injury limits his forecast to 48 games and a 4.7 WARP. It's an uncertain process with guys coming off serious injuries, but the one-year anniversary of his knee surgery isn't until Feb. 12. With a full projection of games played, Rondo's winning percentage would have landed him between Lawson and Lillard in the rankings.

In case you don't have Insider, that would put him 9th in the league.

The usual suspects are ahead of Rondo (Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams, Derrick Rose) as well as some younger guys that you could make a good case for (Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry), but when you start getting down into names like Michael Conley, Kyle Lowry, and Ty Lawson then I have to throw up the stop sign and say "woah, woah, woah."

A fully healthy Rondo runs circles around those guys and at times demands to be spoken of with the top point guards in the league. There's the rub though. He's currently recovering and we aren't sure exactly what he's going to look like this year. I'll let Jay King take a swing at this take.

Rajon Rondo of Boston Celtics not projected among NBA's top 10 point guards, according to ESPN rankings | masslive.com

With all due respect to everyone who now plans to picket the ESPN headquarters ("yah telling me Damian Lillahd is bettah than Rondo?"), Boston's star obviously represents a major question mark entering the season. I don't mean that in a "he might be a huge pain in Brad Stevens' rear" sense either. Recovery from ACL surgery isn't simple. Just ask Ricky Rubio, who shot 34 percent from the field before the All-Star break last season, or Derrick Rose, who never felt comfortable enough to return even after the Chicago Bulls advanced to the second round of the playoffs a full year after his injury. I know Rondo didn't suffer a fully torn ACL like those guys, but he relies on speed and quickness, and he might not have either close to 100 percent by the time the season starts. He'll also be playing without multiple All-Stars alongside him for the first time since his rookie season.

So in my mind, I'm imagining Rondo back at full speed at some point - I just don't know when that will be. I happen to think that he's only going to keep getting better as he refines his game, so long as he hasn't lost too much explosion and change-of-direction quickness.

How good will he be next year? That's anyone's guess. But feel free to debate it in the comments! (hint hint)

India relaxes investment rules for foreign supermarkets

AFP - India on Thursday relaxed foreign investment rules in the lucrative retail sector, the commerce minister said, in a renewed reforms push aimed at wooing global supermarket chains.

Premier Manmohan Singh's government allowed foreign supermarkets to establish 51-percent joint ventures in the country in September 2012, but experts cautioned that restrictive conditions would deter retailers from investing.

Commerce minister Anand Sharma said foreign retailers will be allowed to invest 50 percent of an initial mandatory investment of $100 million to set up "backend infrastructure" within three years, but the government would not insist on further such investments.

Sharma added that the cabinet had also decided to overturn an earlier rule that only allowed foreign retailers to set up shop in cities with a population of at least one million people.

Several multi-brand retailers including Walmart, Tesco and Carrefour have expressed interest in India's huge consumer market but have run shy since September's announcement, citing difficult investment conditions.

India's once-galloping economy has slowed sharply in recent months and the embattled Congress-led government is keen to revive growth before facing voters in a general election that must be held by May 2014.

Thursday's cabinet meeting also gave clearance to pro-market measures approved partially last month, including raising the ceiling on FDI in the telecom sector from 74 percent to 100 percent.

The cabinet abolished the need for government approval for up to 49 percent foreign investment in single-brand retail and petroleum refining.

It also decided it would sell a 10 percent stake in the country's biggest refiner, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the Press Trust of India reported, citing unnamed sources.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India is seen as vital to reducing the deficit and spurring growth, as well as improving the country's creaking infrastructure and providing jobs for its millions of young people.

Economists say India needs to cut red tape, slash inflation, reduce widespread corruption and speed up project approvals to lure investors.
