Several specific regions of our brains are activated in a two-part process when we are exposed to deceptive advertising, according to new research conducted by a North Carolina State University professor. The work opens the door to further research that could help us understand how brain injury and aging may affect our susceptibility to fraud or misleading marketing.

The study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to capture images of the brain while study participants were shown a series of print advertisements. The fMRI images allowed researchers to determine how consumers' brains respond to potentially deceptive advertising. "We did not instruct participants to evaluate the ads. We wanted to mimic the passive exposure to advertising that we all experience every day," says Dr. Stacy Wood, Langdon Distinguished Professor of Marketing at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research.

Participants were exposed to three pre-tested advertisements that were deemed "highly believable," "moderately deceptive" or "highly deceptive." The ads were also pre-tested to ensure that they were for products that consumers found equally interesting and desirable leaving the degree of deception as the only significant variable.

"We found that people have a two-stage process they go through when confronted with moderately or highly deceptive ads," Wood says.

During the first stage, researchers saw increased activity in the precuneus a part of the brain associated with focusing conscious attention. "We found that the more deceptive an advertisement is, the more you are drawn to it," Wood says, "much as our attention is drawn to potential threats in our environment." Specifically, in this study, the more deceptive an ad was, the more precuneus activity was observed.

During the second stage, researchers saw more activity in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and tempero-parietal junction (TPJ) regions of the brain. This suggests increased "theory-of-mind" (ToM) reasoning. ToM is a type of processing that allows us to distinguish our wants and needs from those of others, particularly as this applies to intuiting the intentions of other people. In this case, it appears to indicate that participants were trying to determine the truth behind the claims in the potentially deceptive advertisements.

"What's interesting here is that the moderately deceptive ads cause more activity during this second stage," Wood says. That may be because highly deceptive ads are screened out more quickly and discarded as not meriting further attention.

Overall, when looking at both stages of brain response, researchers found there was greater brain activation when participants were exposed to moderately deceptive ads. But, if moderately deceptive ads stimulate more brain activity, does that make us more susceptible to the sales pitch in ads that trigger just a pinch of skepticism?

Apparently not. In a follow-up, behavioral component of the study, researchers interfered with the ToM stage, making it more difficult for participants to determine the intention behind the ads. As a result, participants more frequently believed moderately deceptive advertising. This suggests that the second stage is an important step that helps protect consumers by allowing them to better discriminate and screen out deceptive ads.

"Now that we've identified these stages of brain response, it may help future researchers identify underlying neural reasons why some populations are more prone to fall prey to deceptive ads," Wood says. "For example, if these regions of the brain are likely to be affected by aging, it may explain why older adults are more vulnerable to fraud or deceptive advertising. Or how might concussive brain injuries, such as those seen in some sports, affect our long-term discrimination in making good consumer choices?"

Sometimes there are very, very good pieces in the?New York Times. Usually, they don?t get nearly enough attention. One of the reasons is that the deliciousness of what is being reported is kept from the large audience who might act on the information because it has been packaged instead for the wrong crowd.

Writing about what?s wrong with Wall Street in an investor-oriented?Times column called Dealbook is like writing about new developments in deadly weaponry for a publication aimed at maximum security prisoners: it just gives them new ideas.

Such it is with an?article about subprime mortgages, bonds, and those who invest in them. The?Times has a great little updater on this, about a character named Greg Lippmann who is straight out of Oliver Stone?s?Wall Street.

Some Wall Street investors made money as the mortgage market boomed; others profited when it fell apart.

Having reaped big gains during both of those turns, Greg Lippmann, a former star trader at Deutsche Bank, is now catching the next upswing: buying the same securities built from mortgages that he bet against before the financial crisis erupted.

Mr. Lippmann is joined by other big-money investors ? mutual funds like Fidelity as well as hedge funds ? in riding a wave of interest in the same complex loan pools that nearly washed away the financial system?.

Ahem! But instead of this being read by those independents trying to decide what they think of Occupy Wall Street, or by teetering homeowners who are thinking of voting for Mitt Romney because he promises lower prices at the tank, it will be read primarily by the same amoral miscreants gaming the system?like the guy in the article.

The underlying point of the piece is this: There?s no stopping these SOBs. They can ruin people?s lives, and ruin the country?.and they just keep on merrily chugging.

As if to underline the point about the moral depravity and utter blindness to the misery caused by this kind of speculation, how does this man spend his free time? Not passing out blankets to the poor, presumably. No, passing judgment on which high-priced Manhattan sushi restaurants are up to his exacting standards. That about says it all:

Let ?em eat sushi. But why let ?em destroy our lives with impunity?

Bill to end community councils dies in Senate committee; bill may return next session

The saga concerning the future of community councils in Kirkland and Bellevue took another unexpected turn in Olympia Friday, as it failed to get out of a Senate committee.

The bill looked like it was headed to the Senate floor just prior to the vote in the Senate Government Operations, Tribal Relations and Elections Committee late Thursday. But the measure failed to gain enough signatures to move ahead as it finished with three in favor and three against.

The bill, which passed the House 56-40 on Feb. 9, would have set an end to the councils, effective Jan. 6, 2014. The Bellevue Community Council and Kirkland?s Houghton Community Council are the only two of their kind left in Washington State.

But this may not be the end of the debate.

?I?ll think very seriously about bringing it up again,? said former Kirkland Mayor and current Rep. Larry Springer (D-Kirkland), who introduced the bill.

Springer said that with elections coming up the makeup of the Legislature will change: ?Things may look very different next session.?

The news was welcome to those in support of the community councils.

?It is great that our community was able to present a convincing argument to our legislators so they would see how important it is,? said Houghton Community Council member Georgine Foster.

Supporters of the bill say the councils violate the fundamental tenant of one person, one vote.

?The Community Council of Houghton retains land use veto power over the City of Kirkland?s land use decisions,? testified Springer on Tuesday. ?There are 10 or 12 regulations that are different in Houghton than in the rest of the City of Kirkland.?

But supporters of the councils say that they still have relevance to the current cities.

?I do not view my power as vetoing but problem solving,? testified Houghton Community Council member Lora Hein.

Hein took issue with the fact that things were playing out in Olympia and not in the two cities where the bill would have the most effect.

?It is not in this state?s business to deny people their rights,? said Hein.

Foster echoed those sentiments.

?We have always said it should not be dealt with in Olympia,? said Foster. ?If they can convince people in Houghton that we serve no purpose they would vote us out.?

Foster admitted that sentiment has been moving in that direction.

?There are some people in Houghton who do think it should be sunsetted,? said Foster. She added that she only wants the council to continue if the city as a whole feels it serves a greater purpose.

Many high profile Kirkland residents testified at the hearing on Tuesday.

?This is a contentious issue in Kirkland,? testified Kirkland City Councilman Bob Sternoff as a citizen in support of the councils.

Sternoff said that he was not there to represent the Kirkland City Council. He stated that the Kirkland Council voted to not take a stance on the issue.

?I am here representing the people asking ?why??? said Sternoff, who does not live in Houghton. ?? I like having another body to review issues.?

For Kirkland, the issue began more than 40 years ago when the former City of Houghton was annexed into Kirkland.

But those in support of the bill said that the long-term continuation of the Houghton Community Council was not intended.

?When we discussed this issue there was supposed to be a sunset on this bill in 10 years, for some reason, that didn?t show up on the bill and none of us caught that,? said Bill Woods, who served as Kirkland?s mayor from 1966-73. ?What happened to Houghton was they were bankrupt. We found $40,000 worth of unpaid bills that none of the Houghton residents knew existed. In 1968, that was a lot money. Citizens of Kirkland paid those bills and citizens who were not part of Kirkland continue to pay those bills.?

The neighborhood only has 6,000 people and could not sustain itself today as a city, testified Springer. Nona Ganz, a former Kirkland City Council member, testified that only 7 percent of Kirkland?s population lives in Houghton and that the community councils are tough on the city?s budget.

The issue was formerly brought to Olympia last year by Springer. An uproar occurred from Houghton residents as they claimed the bill was not brought in a transparent manner.

In response to the outcry, Springer helped to kill the bill but said he would bring it back up, in a deliberate manner during this session.

Earliest horses show past global warming affected body size of mammals

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? As scientists continue developing climate change projection models, paleontologists studying an extreme short-term global warming event have discovered direct evidence about how mammals respond to rising temperatures.

In a study appearing in Science Feb. 24, researchers from eight institutions led by scientists from the University of Florida and University of Nebraska found a correlation between temperature and body size in mammals by following the evolution of the earliest horses about 56 million years ago: As temperatures increased, their body size decreased.

"Horses started out small, about the size of a small dog like a miniature schnauzer," said co-author Jonathan Bloch, associate curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus. "What's surprising is that after they first appeared, they then became even smaller and then dramatically increased in size, and that exactly corresponds to the global warming event, followed by cooling. It had been known that mammals were small during that time and that it was warm, but we hadn't understood that temperature specifically was driving the evolution of body size."

Sifrhippus, the earliest-known horse, first appeared in the North American fossil record during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. During this 175,000-year climate event, increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and oceans caused average global temperatures to rise 10 to 20 degrees. By analyzing the size and isotopes of fossils collected in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin, researchers traced the evolution of Sifrhippus from an estimated 12-pound animal that shrank during a 130,000-year period about 30 percent to 8.5 pounds -- the size of a small house cat -- then increased to about 15 pounds during the next 45,000 years.

"This is the highest-resolution terrestrial record of its kind from anywhere in the world and it shows how climate changed in Wyoming at that time," said lead author Ross Secord, who began geochemical analysis of the horse teeth and other mammals as a postdoctoral researcher with Bloch before joining the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2008. "When Jon and I started plotting oxygen data from the mass spectrometer, we could immediately see that the shifts in size of horses and temperature were mirror images of each other."

Bloch said the project began about seven years ago when former UF student and study co-author Stephen Chester, now an anthropology doctoral candidate at Yale University, measured horse teeth that seemed to be too large for their age and became smaller through the geologic section. The findings raise important questions about how animals might respond to future rapid climate change.

"We're seeing about a third of the mammals getting smaller and some of them getting a lot smaller, by as much as half of their original body size," Secord said. "Because warming happened much slower during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, mammals had more time to adjust their body size. So, it's not clear that we're going to see the same thing happening in the near future, but we might."

Philip Gingerich, who first recorded the phenomenon of decreasing body size during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum in 1989, said the study documentation clearly demonstrates the relationship between temperature and body size. He agrees this may occur as a result of current warming patterns.

"I joke about this all the time -- we're going to be walking around 3 feet tall if we keep going the way we're going," said Gingerich, a researcher at the University of Michigan and director of its Museum of Paleontology. "Maybe that's not all bad and if that's the worst it gets, it will be fine. You can either adapt, or you go extinct, or you can move, and there's not a lot of place to move anymore, so I think it's a matter of adaptation and becoming smaller."

Researchers also analyzed correlations with aridity and carbon dioxide levels but found temperature to be the most likely driving factor in body size. Although little is known about how animals arrived in North America at that time, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum is a significant event in geologic time in terms of mammalian history, Bloch said.

"The PETM is really important because it marks the beginning for the first appearance of several major groups of mammals, including crown-group primates (ancestors of modern primates) and the first even- and odd-toed modern ungulates (mammals with hooves)," Bloch said. "This sets the scene for the entire diversity of animals we see on the planet today."

Study co-authors include Doug Boyer of Brooklyn College, Aaron Wood of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and the Florida Museum, Scott Wing of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, Mary Kraus of the University of Colorado, Francesca McInerney of Northwestern University and John Krigbaum of UF.
