Cellphones Cause Cancer ? The WHO?s International Agency for Research on Cancer sparked a controversy after the agency?s announcement on Tuesday stated that the cellphones cause cancer. The agency?s announcement was based on the year-long research which also found that globally, there are at least 5 billion cellphones users in the world today. This figure comprises almost three-quarters of the planet?s population. The US National Cancer Institute, however, had presented conflicting data which showed that the incidence and mortality rate of central nervous system and brain cancers remained unchanged since 1987, Abcnews.com reported.
The WHO?s report which stated that cellphones causes cancer insist that cellphones users have greater risks to contract a brain tumor called glioma if they are exposed to the cellphones for more than 30 minutes every day over 10 years. The risk percentage had been that of 40 percent. Another type of cancer was also considered to be present in the parts of the brain that are exposed to the strongest radiation from the device. The cancer, called acoustic neuroma, was considered in the WHO papers that have not yet been released.
So far, there were at least 30 studies that have tried failed to proof that indeed cellphone cause cancer. The topic itself had been raging since 1970s when the first cellphone size was introduced. A study even stated that people who have been much exposed to the land lines could develop greater risk for contracting a cancer.
The key to the relatively lower mortality caused by cancer contracted from cellphones usage is the time. Cellphones have not yet been too long around while the tumor involved should take years or even decades to develop. Some researchers even believe that currently there is not any person who has been exposed too much to cellphones to develop any visible sign of cancer. According to Dr. Keith L. Black, a doctor at the neurosurgery department at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, the long term consequence of radiation for the brain had not yet been understood.
Dr. Peter Shields, chief of Georgetown University Hospital?s cancer genetics and epidemiology program in Washington, D.C, stated that the WHO?s cellphone cause cancer was a precaution effort to keep the public health at the most optimum level because further, such precaution will be able to affect regulations and laws for the industry.
As if helping the WHO?s announcement and Dr. Shields suggestion, researches at the University of Utah insisted that children of 5-years and 10-years have been found to be exposed to higher radiation dose. If the precaution principle is to be employed consistently, the Utah finding may add to the creation of new regulations since there are more and more children adopt cellphones.
Existing regulation behind cellphones
The FCC of the US set 1.6 watts per kilo of the body tissue as a maximum limit. But the figure is obtained after they had measured the device carried inside of belt holsters. They had not yet measured the effect with the currently popular practice, namely bringing the cellphones in a pocket. The popular recommendation still states that a user has to hold the device at least an inch away from the body.
