Question by Ashley D: teachers, have you ever employd a video game as a teaching aid?
i was just over in the video game section and consequentlymebody was asking if there was a video game about the economy, were you could consequentlyrt of program your own and see what happened. and it got me contemplateing about all the Mass Multiplayer Online games i play that have their own economy, and how a lot of them could easily be employd to interpret economics to students. there is supply and demand, advertising, stock market like situations with people trying to sell before the price gets any lower or buy before the price gets any higher, all consequentlyrts of that stuff.
its just one example i can contemplate of. but it got me wondering, any teachers out there, have you ever employd a video game as a teaching aid? if consequently, what game was it and what did you teach with it?
if you are opposed to the idea, please state why. or, if you haven?t and are not opposed, would you be willing to if given the ok by the school district?
i also would like to point out i dont anticipate video games to become any consequentlyrt of dominating coerce in the world of teaching. but i can honestly admit that had world of warcraft existed when i was in high school (came out the year after i graduated) and a teacher could show me how the economy of the real world was like that of WoW, it surely would have made things more interesting than just reading about it in a book. and i love reading
david, i get where your coming from with the real world experiences thing. it wasnt online or anything, but a math teacher one year set up our class in pairs, and gave us monopoly money to ?buy? stocks consequently we could learn about percentages and things. it was a lot of fun, we learned math an economics. and in freshman year at our high schools we KNEW we were going to play ?the game? where we were put in pairs and assigned a country. in term ofout the year we did various reports and projects on that country, including the entire year where we had to chart and keep track of our countries ?economy? derived from trades and things we made with other countries. it just consequentlyrt of makes sense to me now that if there were a video game to help teach stuff, and it were utilized appositely, it could help a lot of kids learn.
